    Description

We are a family community project located in eastern Slovakia near the lake Zemplínska Šírava.
Our place is a 100-year-old grain barn, surrounded by a garden and open land. Over the last four years we have been slowly transforming it into a small community space where families, children and creative people can meet.

During the week we host a small community learning group for children (unschooling style). On the weekends we organise workshops, community gatherings, and a small annual festival.

We also take care of a growing permaculture garden, plant trees and create a welcoming space where people can spend time together in nature.

We are a family without children and we enjoy living a slower, community-oriented life.

  • Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Life is simple and community-oriented, but also quite natural and informal. We are a small family project run mainly by us – a young couple without children – and the place becomes lively especially during the day when children and families gather here.

Most days are relaxed and organic. People come to the garden, children play, and we spend time outside working on small projects or taking care of the space. In the afternoons, some parents and kids stay after activities and we often end up chatting together.

Shared meals or small fires in the garden happen occasionally rather than as a strict routine. During the summer season the place becomes much more alive – with small gatherings, workshops, or cultural evenings where friends and local community members join us.

Volunteers can learn about natural gardening, permaculture basics, planting trees, and how a small community space grows and develops over time. You might also experience how we organize simple cultural events and create a welcoming place where people enjoy spending time together.

Hosting people from different cultures is something we value a lot. It brings fresh energy and new ideas. Sometimes volunteers even inspire new activities or help bring people together more often, which we always appreciate.

  • Help

    Help

We usually host 2 volunteers at a time.

    Possible activities include:

    • spending time with children and helping with creative activities
    • playing outside with kids and supporting learning activities
    • helping in the permaculture garden
    • preparing community events and small festivals
    • cooking together for the group
    • helping with small creative projects around the space

Help time is usually 4–5 hours a day, 5 days a week.
Volunteers support activities but children are always supervised by us.

This is the typical work-exchange format used on Workaway where volunteers help around 20–25 hours weekly in exchange for food and accommodation.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Accommodation is simple but comfortable. Volunteers stay in a clean shared or private room in our community space. We provide beds, basic bedding and a warm, safe place to sleep. In the summer it is also possible to stay in a tent in the garden if someone prefers being closer to nature.

Food is mostly vegetarian and based on simple home cooking. We usually provide basic ingredients and often cook together. Sometimes we share meals, and sometimes volunteers cook for themselves or together with others in the kitchen.

Life here is quite relaxed and informal. We try to create a friendly atmosphere where everyone feels welcome and contributes a little to daily life – whether that is cooking, cleaning up after meals, or helping keep the shared spaces nice.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

In their free time volunteers can enjoy the beautiful nature around us. We are located very close to Zemplínska Šírava, which is only about 5 minutes away and offers swimming, beaches and summer activities. The area is also nice for cycling, walking and simple hikes in the surrounding countryside.

There are several interesting places nearby, including a lavender farm and small villages where you can experience local life. There are also local markets and festivals in the region.

We have a bus stop right in front of the place, which makes it easy to reach nearby towns. If possible, we can sometimes lend a car for short trips or help organize rides depending on the situation.

Life is quite relaxed and informal. We simply ask everyone to respect the shared space, help keep things clean, and be mindful of the children and families who spend time here during the day.

    Space for parking camper vans

We have space in our garden where campers or motorhomes can park. The area is quiet and surrounded by nature. It is a simple setup rather than a formal campsite. Volunteers with campers can use basic facilities such as the outdoor bathroom, kitchen and common areas. There is water, electricity available and a place to relax outside. The place works best for people who enjoy a simple lifestyle and being close to nature.

    Can possibly accept pets

Pets can sometimes be accepted if they are friendly and well behaved. Because there are children and other people in the community space, it is important that pets are calm and under control. Please always let us know in advance if you plan to travel with a pet so we can see if it fits well with the situation at the time.
