    Description

My name is Hendrik, most people call me Hank. I am for Holland and I have been living on Tortola for more than 25 years. I had several jobs and businesses on the island and I have built three houses on Tortola. I leave alone with Lucky, my newly adopted cat that I found in the garbage container one day.

I am a positive person, I have a good sense of humour. I like to share my knowledge about various things: construction, cooking, health, natural medicine, philosophy etc. I am curious and never stop learning.

I have almost completed work on my house but finishing work is still remaining. I am starting a new project of building a tiny visitor house just beside my main residence.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

I like to travel a lot and love meeting other travelers. I have done many bicycle trips, sail trips, and road trips all over the world. I like to share my knowledge, skills and stories with others and I look forward to learning from you as well. When I am on the island, I try to enjoy life as much as possible. I like to take people out fishing or going for a bicycle ride. I love cooking and growing my own food. I am passionate about preparing healthy food in traditional ways.

You can expect to learn genuine dutch recipes (butterballs, frikandelle, beef and kidney stew, worstenbroodjes) numerous island plants, fruits (noni, mammee apple, passion fruit growing on the house) and herbs (fever grass, moringa, neem, graviola) that can be used for cooking, infusion or healing. And so much more.

By exploring the island, you will have access to traditional Caribbean culture, food, farmer's markets, art exhibitions and numerous beach music events. There are historical sites to visit as the Callwood Distillery, the Fort Burt, and mostly the HM Prison Museum where you can learn about slavery and rebellion in Tortola.

  • Help

    Help

The help I need is mostly construction and renovation work, cooking but I could also use some help with chores around the house and the garden. I am involved in a lot of different projects so we can probably find something for you to do related to your skills and interests.

The help will probably vary a lot and not a day will be the same. Some days we might take it easy and only work a couple of hours in the morning and go fishing in the afternoon. Other days we might have to work a bit longer to finish a job. I am very flexible and I don't have time pressure, so most of the time there will be a relaxed atmosphere.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

The accommodation for the volunteers will be a private bedroom with one bed (double/queen) and an attached private bathroom. The house is located on the north side of Tortola island, where the view is incredible on other British Virgin Islands. The house's patio remains the most appreciate spot of the house where we have meals, naps, cooking and more.

The Trunk Bay beach is accessible, 30 minutes of walk and mostly empty. Trunk Bay is the beach where the Leatherback Turtles nest ever year.

    What else ...

You will have time to explore the island. You can borrow one of my bicycles. It is also common and easy to hitchhike on the island. There is numerous snorkelling sites to see Caribbean fish and ray. Should you want to explore other islands, you could enjoy Virging Gorda's baths or Anegada worldwide renown beaches.

So if you want to stay on Tortola for a while and do you think you can help me out with my projects don't hesitate to send me a message.
