I had so much fun with Mary and Tim in Asheville! They are such great hosts and do everything to make your stay as memorable as possible. Mary makes sure you have all the best recommendations for things to do in the area and makes sure you have the time to do it. The work isn't too hard and Mary is super grateful for everything you do. She's super
… read more knowledgeable about gardening and is happy to teach you whatever she knows. Also, Simone the cat is very cute. I'd love to come back any time and help out! Thank you for having me!

To start with: I can only confirm the reviews below 100%.
I stayed about 2 weeks at Mary & Tim's place and absolutely loved it. They made me feel so incredibly welcome from the very first minute on. They are such open-minded, kind, very interested in other countries & cultures, and so young at heart. I learned some things about gardening,
… read more definitely a lot about the history of the Southern States, and and their hospitality. I also had the opportunity to meet some of their friends, and to be honest, I never thought I would enjoy having dinner with a couple of people in their 60's and 70's as much as I did.
About the work: it was very light. I was very happy I could give Mary a hand taking cate of her beautiful garden & organize the garden house a bit. And even though I did nothing outstanding and obviously helping in the garden is part of the exchange, Mary was always so appreciative.
I am very grateful that I got the chance to meet Mary and Tim (& their friends) and am so excited to see them again in Berlin very soon! You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

THE BEST host you could ever ask for. I had the most wonderful stay with this couple. As Allison, said... you will become family.
Tim & Mary are incredibly friendly, fun, and generous. World travelers, they are very open-minded, accepting, and interesting people. I was blown away by how welcoming they were. They are the kind of hosts that are
… read more genuinely curious about you, and want to spend time getting to know you. They will introduce you to their friends & neighbors, include you in gatherings, and will make recommendations for where to go/what to do. They really go above and beyond to make their guests happy and comfortable.
I was there during the covid-19 lockdown time, so I can't say much about Asheville city life, as I was unable to participate in normal area activities (live music, crunchie meet ups, festivals, bars/night life). I will say that everyone I met in Ashville was very friendly. And the hiking is fabulous. Plenty of trails, mountains, waterfalls, and swimming holes within driving distance. Tim & Mary's house is within city limits, about a 10 minute walk to downtown. I'd consider a stay here a true cross-cultural experience. Being from the North (US), I learned A LOT about the South, its history, and the classic "southern hospitality" you often hear of. Mary is a fabulous cook and will make you all her favorite Southern dishes.
The work itself was truly enjoyable. I mainly helped Mary in the beautiful gardens weeding, pruning, cutting flowers for arrangements, and some planting. I helped Tim with a couple bigger painting and porch projects which was also great fun, and skill building for me. They are both very knowledgeable about their crafts (Mary/flowers, Tim/building) and excellent teachers. I want to reiterate that this is a FLOWER LOVERS PARADISE. Mary has hundreds of flowers growing and you can be sure to learn all about them if you want.
Their home is comfortable and beautiful. I had my own bedroom with a double bed and a private bathroom (shared only when their son was home to visit). Could not have asked for anything more.
I'm so glad the stars aligned and was able to stay here. It was very much a magical, meant-to-be sort of thing. Forever grateful for the Asheville crew I can call family. <3 <3 <3

Tim and Mary are absolutely incredible. They treated me like a daughter from the very first day; I was only there a week and they now feel like family :) I recommend them as hosts 1000%!!
We had wonderful dinners with their friends, we watched movies, and we talked about all kinds of interesting subjects. Tim and Mary are brilliant, kind, humble,

Mary took a day and drove me around Asheville to see things I never would have known I needed to see (check out the River Arts district) and brought me thrifting/antiquing :} Mary's tour guiding background made this an AMAZING cultural exchange- not something I was expecting being from US myself!
The house, the garden, my room- everything was beautiful (and my bed was really comfortable). My bathroom had a claw foot tub- a huge amazing tub! Mary cooks delicious food and is so hospitable. She often brought home yummy treats from her catering job too. mmmm :)
My work:
I really enjoyed the work I did here. Gardening in Mary's many gardens was so fun, rewarding, and I learned so much about flowers and plants. Mary is a wealth of gardening knowledge. I had the task of walking Sassy on the walking trails behind their house. I LOVED doing this. Sassy is the coolest little dog I've ever met. She is TINY. And adorable. I also helped Tim scrub the porch to prepare it for paint. Tim is awesome and great to work with. I came away from every conversation we had feeling better about life :) They are both so appreciative of everything I helped with when I feel I totally got the better deal!
I miss you guys already and I'm glad I'll see you again so soon :)You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.
