We are a small, nature-loving family living by the ocean in Haida Gwaii looking help with a second property we just acquired. The two-bedroom home would suit an individual, couple or small family who could live there independently while working on gardening, interior painting, and possibly providing occasional childcare support (one 6-year old daughter). The home is steps from the beach or (in the other direction) trails through spruce and cedar forests. People come from around the world to explore our remote and beautiful island off the coast of northern British Columbia known for its magical forests, wildlife and coastline.
NOTE: we do not run any business or profit from the farm or house--produce and property all for family use.
Babysitting and creative play
Haida Gwaii is an incredible destination for anyone who enjoys nature, wildlife and the sea. The communities here are very tied to the natural environment and it's an ideal place for hiking, kayaking, fishing, foraging, and outdoor exploration. Because our island is remote, commercial amenities are limited--we have few places to shop, dine out, etc.--but, our islands are rich with wildlife and natural beauty. Eagles nest on the trees, whales can be seen from our town on their annual migration, and it's not uncommon for summer visitors to spot black bears nearby. Locals enjoy making fires on the beach, going out for a paddle in the bay, hunting and fishing, and cooking outdoors.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
We are looking for a volunteer(s) to stay in our recently acquired property that we are developing into a micro-farm. Tasks would include: yard maintenance, gardening, interior painting, simple home improvement tasks, and potentially some child care (i.e. after school). Ideally the volunteers would have a mix of skills that include comfort with garden work, tools, tidiness (painting), experience with home improvements and interest in spending time with children. An energetic couple/traveling partners or family with a young child could be a good fit.
We are looking to find volunteers to come stay and work with us for at least 3 weeks.
The volunteers would enjoy a private, furnished living space to themselves, including 2 bedrooms, living room, bath room, and kitchen (downstairs is used by us as a home office). All utilities and laundry are provided. The house is steps from the beach and there are many nearby forest trails to explore. There is a spacious yard which abuts the school yard with playground and soccer fields. We live about 1km away. Volunteers will cook for themselves and provide their own food. There is a grocery store 1 km from the house.
COVID-19: The living arrangement allows for the space to adhere to covid distancing protocols. Volunteers could contribute and live here with minimal close contact with others, if needed.
We'd love to host volunteers who have experience with home improvement, like kids and are eager to explore Haida Gwaii. The 20 hour/week volunteering leaves lots of time to get out and see this special place. We are happy to help you explore by lending a paddle board, bike or other gear. Having a car will help as there is no public transportation here. However, you can get around well by bike and needn't go far to enjoy some beautiful natural spots.
