We are a small, nature-loving family living by the ocean in Haida Gwaii looking for childcare support during the busy summer months. May-August people come from around the world to explore our remote and beautiful island off the coast of northern British Columbia known for it's magical forests, wildlife and coastline.
Babysitting and creative play
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Haida Gwaii is an incredible destination for anyone who enjoys nature, wildlife and the sea. The communities here are very tied to the natural environment and it's an ideal place for hiking, kayaking, fishing, foraging, swimming and outdoor exploration. Because our island is remote, commercial amenities can be limited--we have few places to shop, dine out, etc.--but, our islands are rich with wildlife and natural beauty. Eagles nest on the trees around our home, whales can be seen from our front yard on their annual migration, and it's not uncommon for summer visitors to spot black bears nearby. In the summers we enjoy making fires on the beach, going out for a paddle in the bay and cooking outdoors.
We are looking for someone to hike through the forest for huckleberries, explore the shore at low tide, and make works of art from rocks and shells with our four year old daughter. She is an adventurous and active kid and we're looking for the babysitter to match. Throughout the summer we are seeking approximately 20 hr/week of childcare. If you have experience working with young children and enjoy coming up with fun activities (especially outdoors) we'd love to hear from you. Someone who enjoys getting out into nature, no matter the weather, would be the best fit.
To complete your wilderness adventure on Haida Gwaii we offer our camping trailer for your private accommodation. Parked under a cherry tree in our backyard, the trailer has two double beds, a dining table/sitting area, and a propane cooktop and ice box. The bathroom is in the main house. The trailer is partially canvas with opening screen windows that let in the ocean breeze. It also has a heater for cool nights. Wifi is provided.
Past volunteers have eaten most meals with us, but simple meals could be prepared in the trailer. You'd be welcome to serve yourself breakfast and lunch from our kitchen and garden and we'd plan to have dinner together up to 5 nights a week. We enjoy home cooked meals that include a variety of fruit, vegetables, grains and dairy. We also eat fish and seafood caught locally and some locally raised meats. We enjoy baking and always have fresh sourdough bread on the counter.
We'd love to host someone who genuinely likes spending time with young kids and is eager to explore Haida Gwaii. The 20 hour/week babysitting requirement leaves lots of time to get out and see this special place. We are happy to help you explore by lending a paddle board, bike or other gear. Often opportunities arise to get out on a boat, go fishing, or take an overnight kayaking or backpacking trip. We would work with any volunteer staying with us to help them take advantage of those moments.
