A LITTLE BIT ABOUT US
We are Maggie and Magne, a couple in our ealry fourties. Currently we are living with our 20 year old fosterdaughter Malin. We both work full time jobs, and we have two homes to take care of. One in Bodø town, and one on beutiful Landegode Island (You will mainly be based at Landegode).
When there is no pandemi, we normally host a lot of family and friends. The rest of the year we sometimes (when convinient) rent out a few guestrooms (either in Bodø or at Landegode). Not for profit, but to help us pay the mortgages. Sometimes we keep a few chickens and grow some vegetables.
WHY WE ARE WORKAWAY HOSTS
As we are quit busy and not very handy we simply need some help taking care of our homes and gardens, so that we can get a bit more sparetime. We also really like cultural exchange. In other words: You help us out, and we get time to hang out, teach you about Norway and show you the region. Our workawayers are always treated like family and are welcome to join all meals and family activities.
Magne is from Bergen. He is a geographer/social scientist who now works as an senior advisor for a consulting agency. Previous he has been a consultant at the state reindeer-herding management in Nordland County. He has a lot of knowledge about the Sami-culture, norwegian beauracracy and politics.
Magdalena is a Swedish citicent who grew up in Harstad. She is a social worker/historian/social anthropologist and a cook. Since 2011 she has been working with youths at an activity center for people coping with psyciatric illness. Last year she got a part-time job at the local grocery store at Landegode. She has diverse knowedge about anthropology, natur, foraging, cooking, food-persevation and baking.
Malin is also from Harstad. She is soon to graduate high- school, and have a part time job at a sushi-restaurant. She is spending most of her sparetime at home or with her boyfriend. She likes gaming, cooking and make up. This autumn she will move out, to attend an alternativ boarding school. There se will learn about travelling and Japanese culture.
We have known Malin all her life, and she has been living with us the last three years. She has a twin sister (Mette) who is also part of our family and sometimes comes to visit.
All of us love traveling and Magne and Maggie have some solid experiences from studying, living, volunteering and working abroad in in different countries.
Our workawayers get a comfy room at Landegode and free meals. You will also always be welcome to join us for activities such as hiking, kayaking, outdoor cooking, camping, small road trips, foraging, fishing, or going to concerts or restaurants. There is no allowance.
Experince from running your own household and living as an independent adult is a must. You also need to be able to comunicate in english. Experience from cleaning tasks, renovation and/or from gardening/growing vegetables is a pluss. Even if the help needed is little and easy, we expect you to take it seriously. No matter how small and meaningless a task might seem, we want it to be done it with commitment, thorughness and care. We appriciate workawayers who sees what's needs to be done, and offers to help out by their own initiative.
You shouldn't smoke, do drugs or have unhealthy drinking habits. We do our best trying to understand, be tolerant and respectful to all cultures, personalities, identities and ideologies. So we expect the same from our workawayers.
We are hoping you will feel at home, and that this should be a reson to respect our daily routines.

Creating/ Cooking family meals
Help around the house
We can teach you about Norwegian (and Sami) culture. If you wish Magdalena can teach you about foraging, food conservation, cooking and baking.
You will be welcome to join us for meals and activities. We love to cook quality food with inspiration from all corners of the world. When we have time, we like spending time in nature. Depending on the season we do cook outs, picnics, hiking, swiming, kayaking, fishing or small roadtrips. At winter we like watching moovies, going to the indoor pool/spa or going out to eat at nice restaurants. On the island we have an old but functional bike that you can use as much as you like.
All in all you will get to experience a piece of our life on the arctic circle and learn a lot about Norway.
THE LOCATION AND THE CLIMATE
Both of our homes are located within Bodø Municipality, slightly north of the arctic circle. We have midnightsun in summer and possibility of Northern lights at winter. No need to fear the climate though. Summer temperatures are normally between 10-25 degrees celcius and at winter it is normally between -5 and +5 celcius. It rarly drops below 10 degrees and Norwegian homesare really warm and cozy.
The help is esay: mostly cleaning, changing bedsheets, doing loundry genearal mainteinance and gardening. We might also ask you to help out with small renovation jobs such as painting etc. Plese let us know if there is somthing you are good at, and would like to help us with.
Sometimes we will work together with you, and somtimes you will be doing tasks alone. Some days there are no tasks, and other days there is more. Sometimes we might need your help in town. In general the help can vary. It depends on what needs to be done when, if we are renting out rooms and what we see you fit to do.
You will be helping maximum 5 hours pr day, 5 days a week (normally less). We will try and make your schedule as predictable as possible at least for one week at the time. Most oft he time your schedule can be quite flexible, as long as you get the requested tasks done.
In additon to the workaway tasks, any member of our home, is expected to participate in daily household chores. We will take turns doing shopping, cooking and washing dishes.
You will mainly stay at our Landegode home. Sometimes by yourself. Magdalena stays on the island half the week, Magne aproximatly every other weekend and Malin only once in a while.
Landegode is a beutiful island only 25 minutes north of Bodø. It is accsessed by public transport boats 1-4 times per day, depending on which weekday it is. There are only 40 inhabitants on the island, mostly fishermen and their families. Our house is located in the peacefull and pleasant main village. The house has normal modern comfore, such as hot water and electricity. There are 6 cosy retrostyle bedrooms in the attic. Downstairs there is a comfy livingroom, a fully functional kitchen and a small shared bathrom with a bath tub. The livingroom has a TV, however there are few channels and somtimes a bad signal. There is also a small garden, and an old patio. Normally our homes would from time to time be quite busy. Before the pandemi we used to host a lot of overnight guests, and loved to invite people over for dinner. We hope to pick this up again, as soon as the situation allows it.
Wether we hav guests or not, you will always be having your own private room (either on the island or in town). We will provide all meals (normal dietary). You will also be able to use all the common areas, but should keep in mind that some of our guests somtimes might have first priority.
There is WiFi at the house. Your phone might have 4G, but only if you are using the Telnor network. If you need a computer during your stay you should bring your own laptop.
At weekdays in town we normaly get up at around 7 in the morning, grab ourselves something quick for breakfast and go to work. In the afternoons we have dinner together at around 5-6. Normally we go to bed between 10 o'clock and midnight. At the island life is a bit more chilled. Magdalena only works 2.5 to 5 hours per day. Typically breakfast will be around 10 and dinner anytime between 6-8.30. Both places we expect the house to be quite betwen 10 and 10. No parties and no guests unless this has been agreed on in advance. No drugs and only moderate drinking at our homes.
If there is not much work to do on the island, you can ask to join Magdalena and stay in town for a few days.
This is a stunning beutiful island close to Bodø. There are not any facilities such as cafés, bars etc, but heaps of stunning beutifull wild nature! You can go on excursions and discover crazy rock formations, narrow passages, caves, quiet valleys, marshes or white coral beaches.
We keep two kayaks here. If you have some experience and/or prove to be good at it, we might lend you one. There is also an old bike to use when ever you feel like it. The road stretches only 9 km. So walking or paddeling might be a better option. This is the perfect place if you enjoy life at a slow pace, and if you like to explore wild untouched nature. It is just as beautiful as Lofoten, but yet to be discovered by tourists. A lot of the time you will not meet a single soul on your hikes.
There are no dangerous animals, but the terrain can be a bit tricky if you are not used to it. The weather can also change quickly. Obviously we will help you plan your excursions and make sure you feel safe, befor sending you off alone.
A medium-sized Norwegian town, just above the artic-circle. This is where the Norwegian railroad ends, and you can also easily get here by plane or by boat. The town is surrounded by georgues natur like clear blue sea, white coral-beaches and peaky mountains. It is a great base for hiking, biking, kayaking, sailing, fishing, climbing or other outdoor activities.
There are also a few nice cafees, bars and restaurants in town as well as some small galleries and a few museums. Bodø is also the best gateway to the famous Lofoten Islands, beutiful Kjerringøy, and the worlds fastest tide-water male-stream Saltstraumen. Svartisen glacier is only a few hours drive away. If you enjoy spending time in nature, you will definetly enjoy Bodø!
