    Description

    Who are we?
We are a non-profit organisation based just outside of Huanchaco, Northern Peru that dedicates its actions and efforts to rescuing vulnerable children and adolescents from the street or from families in states of economic poverty and who suffer from violence and abuse.

    Our story:
The non-profit was founded in 2001 and in our 23 years of uninterrupted running, we have given shelter to 165 children and teenagers. Many of them have been successfully reinserted into society thanks to the personalised therapeutic program, education, affection and values provided in the home, which now allow them to face their future with better opportunities. Currently, we have 9 boys and teenagers being taken care of within the home.

    Our mission:
Our mission is to transform the living conditions of the children through a care system based on love, compassion and positive discipline. We advocate for de-institutionalisation and promote autonomy and social interaction through healthy support networks.

    Our vision:
We aim to protect the physical and emotional integrity of children, with the vision of healing the traumas of their past, providing security and love, and equipping each child with essential knowledge and skills for their ethical and productive re-insertion into society.

Volunteering with us and working with kids from difficult backgrounds is an incredibly rewarding and enriching experience and you will be forming meaningful relationships with the boys. You will be volunteering in a team of incredible tutors, psychologists and staff members who are all dedicated to improving the lives of these children and you will be able to gain valuable experience working within a non-profit organisation.

In your free time, you will also have the opportunity to explore the beautiful surrounding area of Huanchaco, a World Surfing Reserve with some of the best waves in the world! You will be able to connect with the local community and experience the authentic local Peruvian culture, away from the main touristic sites like Cusco. We have lots of local friends, family and connections and we can provide lots of recommendations and tips! Huanchaco is a beautiful small town with a strong connection and appreciation for the ocean. You will very quickly notice that the local fisherman continue to use ancient fishing techniques and use the traditional reed fishing boats to catch fish every morning! We are very proud that some of the boys in the home also have this strong connection with the ocean and are now keen surfers as well.

Huanchaco is located 20 minutes outside of Trujillo, a major city with a well connected airpot. Huanchaco is also very well located for weekend trips into the mountain towns like Huaraz and Cajarmarca, or beach getaways to places like Chicama and Mancora.

    Who are we looking for?
We are looking for professional and dedicated volunteers who are interested in working with children and young adults. Since the children in our home have very complicated backgrounds we are especially looking for individuals with experience in social work, psychology, counselling, childcare and other related areas. It is essential that volunteers feel comfortable working with children with difficult backgrounds and know how to handle uncomfortable situations that can arise. A high level of Spanish is essential for this role!

We are also looking for genuinely kind and caring people that share our organisation's values of love, empathy, resilience, responsibility & happiness. We are looking for people with great morals who can become positive role models and mentors for the boys and help to expand their horizons. The boys have very big hearts and are very welcoming to volunteers, they also have lots of energy and it is important that volunteers are enthusiastic and have lots of energy too!

What type of help do we need?
Our volunteers assist the tutors and psychologists in looking after the boys and accompanying them throughout the day. Here some some examples of the typical responsibilities of the volunteers:
    - Supporting the tutors
    - Helping with homework and school tasks
    - Organising educational & recreational activities for the boys
    - Accompanying the boys to their activities or medical appointments
    - Spending time and having fun with the boys

    Accommodation

We have a small private room available for volunteers in the boy's home for those are wishing to stay with us. The boy's home is located just 5 minutes outside of Huanchaco. You will have access to a your private room, shared bathroom, wifi, and cooking area.

However, most volunteers choose to stay outside of the boy's home in order to have a bit more independence and time to relax outside of volunteering. We can recommend some great places in Huanchaco with friends/local connections and we can help to organise this for you!
