Our place is not simply a place for travelers to sleep. It’s more like a community house that attracts like-minded people. A place where yogis, meditators, musicians, artists, healers, and generally magical people like yourself come to recharge and connect. We are 100% not a party hostel, but there’s a super friendly, social vibe if you feel like ‘peopling’ and a super chill, laid-back vibe for when you’d rather hang with the hostel’s two cats.
We hold daily events that help you grow personally and spiritually. Yoga classes 4 times a week, meditation classes and guided practice twice a week, plus a weekly cacao ceremony, movie night and family dinner. The hostel is located right in the charming historic center of San Cristobal de las Casas, within a 5-10 minute walk from anything you could ever need. Local markets, restaurants, nature hikes, and main attractions.
Our place is home to a Spiritual Residency Program, which is like a “soul school” where you accelerate your personal growth and spiritual awakening while living at the hostel for a month or more.
The benefits of this program:
- Find greater happiness, fulfillment and purpose in your life.
- Explore higher levels of consciousness
- Learn how to integrate financial success into spiritual living
- Learn highly effective techniques for meditation, lucid dreaming, being more fully present, and yoga as not simply a physical practice
At this time we are only seeking Work Away volunteers for this special residency program. If you are looking simply for a place to stay and sleep in exchange for working some shifts at a hostel, this program will not be the right fit for you. If instead you are looking to work on yourself and go deeper in your spiritual practice while also working some shifts at a hostel, please contact us for the brief application form.
Every volunteer resident in the program works three 5-hour shifts per week (on average), which is considerably less work time than most volunteer programs. We take on more volunteers so each person can work less hours at the hostel and have more time to work on themselves.
Each week you will be required to attend 5 morning meditations (7:30-8AM), one evening discussion, one group circle, one group class (yoga, meditation or cacao ceremony), and one hypnotherapy session to work on anything you wish.
You are welcome to attend more than the required minimum. There are also some simple daily assignments.
We are looking for people who will approach the program from a place of service and love, much like a Karmic Yogi. Someone who will show up for their own practice and spiritual growth with an open heart, open mind, and strong determination. And approach their volunteer work shifts with a friendly, present, and helpful intention.
English: Fluent. For you to get the most value out of the hypnotherapy sessions, meditation classes, cacao ceremonies, and the residency program in general, we are looking for fluent or nearly fluent English speakers. (This is because most of the residency program is conducted in English.)
Spanish: Beginner to Intermediate. We simply ask for basic conversational Spanish, enough to work the reception desk at the hostel, answer the phone and assist our Spanish-speaking hostel guests.
Please note that our Spiritual Residency Program is quite popular and often has a waiting list. There are only so many volunteer slots at one time. We have a paid version of the residency program as well, where you get all the same benefits and unlimited access to classes, but instead of working shifts at the hostel, you simply pay $16,000 MXN pesos per month for the program (includes shared room and free daily breakfast). If you would like more information on the paid program, please make note of this when you fill out the application form (we will send you the link when you message us.)
We have 1 room with 6 bunk beds for all the volunteer residents. There are some renovations and upgrades planned for this room in the near future, at which point we will temporarily move the residents to one of the guest dorms.
San Cristobal de las Casas is known as a “pueblo mágico” (magic town). The town has a special magnetic vibe that seems to attract people from all over the world. This vibe lured the hostel’s current owner, Herb B., to settle here permanently after years of traveling the world.
Herb has over 20 years of experience teaching meditation and helping people explore deeper states of consciousness. His hypnotherapy practice is right next door to the hostel and serves as a powerful healing modality that interplays well with the other aspects of the Spiritual Residency Program. For more information on Herb’s approach to meditation, hypnosis and mentorship, we invite you to drop by the hostel in person (if possible) for one of his free meditation lectures and guided practices, every Monday and Friday at 11AM.
