    Description

Who we are and what drives us

At the beginning of 2021, we started transforming Kermershof, an organic farm, into a vibrant community hub with a holistic concept for participation and hands-on experiences. As a farm collective and a non-profit cooperative, we are committed to sustainable and fair agriculture.
Our team consists of our farming family—Thorsten and Rahel, along with our four children (ages 4–12 and the Solawi team, which includes 5 employees: gardeners Michael and Freya (who lives on the farm with her partner and child), Patrick, our education coordinator , Matthias (our BFD voluntee), and employee Sascha,. In addition, many volunteers and honorary members support us with educational activities and farm work. Our cooperative now has 350 members.

We believe in truly sustainable agriculture—ecologically, economically, and socially. Our farm produces organic beef (through mobile on-site slaughter, eliminating transport stress) and eggs. Our Solawi (community-supported agriculture) grows vegetables on approximately 1.5 hectares, supplying fresh produce to 170 harvest participants. We also run an educational program, welcoming individuals and school groups to engage with farming and sustainability topics.
Our farm is home to a diverse mix of animals: around 50 free-range cattle (kept in a mother-cow system with integrated holistic grazing principles), four sheep (Coburger Fuchs, an old breed), two ponies, a flock of chickens and roosters, eight ducks, three dogs, and two cats. The farm also includes meadows, forests, an orchard, two ponds, and our newly established 6-hectare agroforestry area, where fruit and nut trees are blooming.

Beyond daily farm life, we organize community events such as farm festivals and participation days for our cooperative members. The farm is located in a small hamlet (just six houses) in the Bergisches Land region. The nearest bus stop is 1.7 km away, and we are 42 km from Cologne by car or 38 km by bike. Wipperfürth town center is a five-minute drive or a 25-minute bike ride away, offering shopping and amenities.

    Accommodation:
You’ll stay in a cozy, converted circus wagon (approx. 20m²) on the Solawi grounds, equipped with a wood-burning stove and cooking facilities. It’s suitable for a couple or a small family (two adults and one child). We value shared time together—chatting, exchanging ideas, and occasionally having meals or barbecues as a group.
During your stay, a communual lunch will be provided on workdays. Jet we love a small chat or spent time together, in the morning, evenings and on weekends, people go their way, so it can accure, that you also enjoy some time alone. We will provide groceries for you.

If you have your own camper van, you can park and live on-site as well.

    Activities & Learning Opportunities:

With such a diverse farm environment, there are plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning and participation.
You will be helping our team with different tasks ,helping us to achieve our non-profit goals and vision.
    • Animal care – feeding, mucking out, adding straw, petting...
    • Permaculture garden & Solawi field – soil preparation, sowing, weeding, harvesting
    • Orchard & agroforestry – tree care and planting...
    • Educational programs – assisting with farm education
    • Farm maintenance & DIY projects – general upkeep, crafting, and small construction projects

You’re welcome to get involved in all aspects of farm life! We’ll provide guidance and support to ensure you feel comfortable with the tasks. We ask that you stay for at least two weeks to make the most of your experience.
We have extensive knowledge in holistic pasture management and vegetable cultivation, which we’re happy to share. Rahel is also an expert in wild herbs. Patrick, a former music teacher, can teach a few guitar chords. Oli and Alina are passionate about nature and have great knowledge of amphibians, insects, and birds. While we are a farm, we’re also interested in modern technology and IT topics.
If you have skills or talents you’d like to share, feel free to contribute! You could even host a workshop if you’d like.

    Community & Free Time
Since we’re a diverse group with various interests, here are some examples of possible (communal) activities: hiking (with or without dogs), medicinal plant identification walks, amphibian spotting, campfires
We’d love to welcome you to our farm! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

  • Help

    Help

We keep cows, chicken and sheep. All need tending and sometimes petting. The animals are kept free range most of the year. The animals are raised for meat and slaughtered peacefully on site without transport.
The cooperative grows vegetables on 1.5 hectares of land. We mostly apply market gardening techniques and only seldomly use the tractor. There we need help with planting, weeding, harvesting, soil preparation and caring for our ducks.
The farm has extensive meadow and some forest areas, which also need to be cared for. Some fencing help, the hay harvest and basic forestry tasks. But don’t be afraid, we support and help you. There is much to learn.
Speaking of learning: We also offer farm-based education for kids and school pupils. Learning by doing is the motto. Once a month we have volunteers’ day, where we all get together, work, eat and have fun.
