    Description

We are a family of 5 living in paradise, beautiful Salt Spring Island! We live on 20 acres within walking distance of downtown Ganges. Our space is mostly forested and includes an orchard, large garden (food and pollinator), greenhouse, a stream/wetland, and a network of hiking trails and boardwalks. We are looking for workawayers who are interested in learning and assisting with permaculture gardening, year-round gardening, DIY projects and assisting in general maintenance jobs around the house and property.

We always have many projects on the go. Current/upcoming outside tasks include preparing seasonal starts in the greenhouse, milling trees into lumber, planting trees in the orchard and the forest, tending the mason bees, chopping and stacking firewood, maintaining the network of hiking trails, fixing and maintaining the irrigation systems just to name a few. Jobs inside the house include processing and preserving food, garden planning, seed sorting/organization and storage, researching garden/seed/composting strategies, plus odd jobs, general cleanup and organization.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will stay in our 30 foot yurt. The yurt is heated by a woodstove and is very comfortable. The yurt has queen and twin beds, electricity and wired internet access. A nearby out-building houses outhouse, a bathroom with a hot shower and a simple kitchen that includes a fridge, hotplate, kettle, microwave and grill. We will prep and eat our meals together in the house, but you may wish to cook for yourselves on your days off, with ingredients we provide.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We prefer to host couples or pairs.
We are within walking distance to town, but have space to park if you wish to bring a vehicle.
We have animals and prefer that you not bring your own.
We do not allow smoking on the property, we eat mostly vegetarian (as low on the foodchain as we can), and enjoy clean living.
We work hard and enjoy spending time outdoors, playing games, crafting and music in our down-time.
We will be very grateful for your help and look forward to having you join us!

We ask you to commit to 5 hours of work each day, 5 days per week. We prep/eat/cleanup our meals outside of this time. We generally work weekends and take our days off during the week. Aside from this, we are able to be flexible with the timing of our work projects. (Keeping in mind most work must be done during daylight hours, so there is more flexibility in the spring/summer/early fall when days are longer). Wifi in the yurt is not great, but there is reliable wired internet for your laptop. Wifi is available in the outbuilding.
