    Description

My name is Daria, 67 years old.

I own a villa where our work, mainly in the summer, is to give hospitality to tourists and guests. We are located in the countryside of Modica and Ispica, with an organic vegetable garden and several fields of carob trees (8 ha).

3 dogs and 9 cats live with us but outside the common house. There is also a henhouse, with 6 chickens giving us fresh eggs each day.

We are open-minded, flexible, and organized to host people: we have 12 years of experience hosting helpers.

We produce jam, marmalade, bread, fresh pasta, olives, carobs, capers, vegetables, and several times typical Italian and Sicilian food. In general, we love to eat quality food!

*** We are interested in hosting Workawayers who would like to stay for longer periods, to give us more consistent help, especially from April to September, in the high-season work period for the B&B, in which we offer payments for all hours and tasks.

Due to the large quantity of work here, we can answer your messages twice a week circa.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Here you'll learn a lot about carob trees and carob harvest, biological culture, baking bread, making pasta, and general life in the countryside. We can teach you about Sicilian culture, traditional food, and Italian language. During your stay, you'll have the opportunity to visit the beautiful surrounding cities and nature places.

This area is rich in natural landscapes: canyons, fields, sea, beaches, but also cultural and historical interests like the Baroque cities of Modica, Scicli, Ispica and Ragusa.

We have a meditation room and we are very likely to do meditation and other spiritual activities, depending on the period.

  • Help

    Help

During the year we need help with agriculture, building, aircraft, and general maintenance of the house like cleaning, cooking, helping organize events, helping with animal care, and also helping in the vegetable garden. The workawayers are part of the family during their stay here and their participation is always welcome, becoming a highlight experience for both parties.

More or less, this is the year work program:
January / February: carob trees pruning, and wood cutting for the winter.
March: carob trees pruning general maintenance, artcraft.
    April: general maintenance & artcraft.
May / June / July: capers harvest.
    August / September: carob harvest.
October / November: olive harvest and transformation.
December: wood cutting for the winter.

During the whole year: vegetable garden care, food production, animal care, house, and room cleaning, cooking for the events, dry stone wall revision, and all those little works that must be done to maintain this place efficiently.

Usually, the time daily work is 5 hours. It can be divided into the entire day, morning or afternoon, depending on the kind of work and the period of the year. Anyway, we’ll agree together the work schedule. You will have 2 days off for yourself per week.

We offer payment and full accommodation.
The payment starts from the national minimum wage, we'll always agree on the details in advance and together with the workawayers depending on the task we need to get done and the skills offered by the workawayer.

    Accommodation

We have a room (attic) dedicated to workawayers that can host 3 people, with 3 beds. Two bathrooms outside the room, are available for use. A warm shower and sheets are provided.

In summer we can host Workawayers with campers or willing to stay in tents.

Wi-Fi is available, but the signal is not strong.

We remember to our workers that food and accommodation are included.
Usually, we have breakfast and lunch all together; dinner can be up to you; so meals are prepared and taken together most of the time in the common kitchen. In any case, you can choose to manage your meals.
We are smokers and we do smoke in the common kitchen
Vegans, vegetarians, omnivorous, and all kinds of food consumers are accepted and respected. Everybody is free to choose what to eat.

We do accept Workawayers with pets.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We are located in the countryside, about 10 minutes drive to Ispica and Modica. If you do not have a car it is not a huge problem, since we could potentially give you a lift to the bus station in Ispica, where you can catch a bus to the surrounding cities. However it is helpful to keep in mind that we are not always available to provide lifts and sometime you may have to find your own way.

We are looking for independent people, a single or a couple, who can take care of this place during the winter time aswell.

    Our valours:
“Treat this place with respect and care as you were in your own home”.
“Everything you enjoy here is due to the help of workawayers, friends, and family. You are a part of this place evolution. Leave things better than how you found them”.
“Remember that everybody is fighting their own wars: be always kind”.
“Be open-minded, patient and flexible, having authentic communication, without the fear of being judge. If you feel uncomfortable about something, just say that and we’ll work together to find a solution”.
“Don’t waste water (here dryness is a concret problem), food and electricity”
“If you see something that needs to be done, be proactive and take initiative. Your extra effort and care are greatly appreciated”.
