    Description

We are an energetic retired couple and a cat living on a 5 acre property. We have a manicured yard around the house, a large vegetable garden and a small orchard. We reside in the beautiful Creston Valley in the central Kootenay area of British Columbia. Creston is situated at the end of Kootenay Lake between the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges. The foothills of the Rocky Mountains are an hours drive away. The area directly around us abounds with hiking trails, biking trails, snowshoe and cross county trails and even some hot springs. There are also lakes and rivers great for swimming, kayaking, boating and fishing. It is an outdoor paradise. At the base of Skimmerhorn Mountain are three wineries/vinyards and a great craft brewery in town. The Canada/USA border is only 12 km from home as well. Our summers are generally hot and sunny. We are proud to showcase our beautiful area to newcomers.

We will be very flexable with the days and the hours you will workaway. We want you to have the opportunities to experience as much as possible in our area. Ron is also an accomplished woodworker and if you are interested in woodworking he would help with that. Deb is a wonderful cook, quilt maker and does stained glass if that is an interest to you. There are great areas to forage for wild mushrooms. Creston has a huge Elk population and grizzly and black bears, deer and wild turkeys area a common sighting here.

The reason we have turned to workaway, we want more time to get out and do more hiking, fishing, boating, etc. and having an extra set of hands will allow that. You would be helping us with yardwork including, weeding of the garden, flower beds and orchard, lawn mowing, raking, bush and tree trimming, fence mending, watering the greenhouse and garden and learning the irrigation system. Cleaning outside decks, sidewalks and windows. We may be spliting and stack firewood at this time. You might help in the workshop with any woodwork project we have on the go including painting, staining, sanding etc.
You will be properly instructed in the use of any motorized tools or equipment and will not be required to use them if you are not fully comfortable doing so. If you like to cook, that is a bonus to us, but not a necessity. On rainy days, we will come inside, turn the music up and get caught up with general housework. Vacuum, wash floors, clean washrooms, dust, laundry etc. After you have been here for awhile and settled in, if you feel comfortable house and cat sitting for a night or two, we would go and visit our daughter and family. That will be determined when you are here.

One of the most important things to us is that you feel at home. Our home is your home. You will have your own large bedroom in the lower area of the house. It has a large closet, a small desk and a dresser. All bedding is provided. The window looks out at the back field facing north. There is a seperate entrance and your own full bathroom. There is another bedroom downstairs where out of town company may stay for a night or two. You might have to share the bathroom at that time, but other than that it is yours. There is a large family room with a TV and a wood burning fireplace adjacent to your room that we will occasionally use to watch TV, other than that, you should find it very private. You will eat your meals with us, if you want. All meals are provided. If you have special dietary needs, we will do a menu and shop when you are here. If you are hungary between meal (remember we said feel at home) then look in the fridge or cupboards and find something that will satisfy that hunger. Help yourself. Just make sure you clean up after yourself.

If you like the outdoors you will love this area. There are various activities happening in the valley all summer including music venues, car races, fishing derby, fall fair, craft shows and others. We have a great open farmers market and our recreation centre is top notch. We also have a good skateboard park. Unfortunately, transportation in the Creston area is lacking, but Ron or I usually go into town every day and can schedule those trips around things you want to do.
