We have a 6 suite inn in beautiful Boca de Tomatlan, 20 kilometres south of Puerto Vallarta situated right on the Horcones river less than 100 metres from Banderas Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It is a lovely fishing village with the beauty of the Pacific Ocean right in our back yard. We work in conjunction with the public School system in Boca de Tomatlan to teach English as well as providing some after school and adult learning opportunities. We are looking for someone with classroom experience to assist in providing programming for the children and adults of Boca de Tomatlan who have a desire to learn English but not necessarily the means or opportunity to do so. We ask for a minimum one month commitment as it's important to connect with the children and become a part of the community. We prefer applicants to have certification in TESOL or TEFL, but will consider applicants with classroom or leadership experience. Accomodation is provided in exchange for your assistance in a one bedroom apartment situated overlooking the Rio Horcones just minutes away from Banderas Bay.
There are few ex-pats in our community although we do have an influx of tourists in the winter months. Working with the children of the community would give the volunteer an opportunity to get to know the people first hand, practice their Spanish if that is a goal and see how a real Spanish village operates behind the scenes of the facets shown to the tourists. We also have connections with the Secundaria and Prepa students in the village with a Community Leadership Program. There may be some opportunity to work with older kids if that is of interest to the volunteer.
We would be asking volunteers for some assistance with housekeeping of the rooms and building - no more than 1.5 hours per day in the morning, AND from Monday's to Thursdays we would be asking for assistance in the classroom in teaching Primary aged children to speak English. The ideal fit is someone who wants to work with the Spanish children of the area. This would be no more than a 2 hour committment on those days. When you are volunteering at the school, the housekeeping portion of the committment would be limited to one hour. Our organization - offers free training in English for kids who would not otherwise have the opportunity to learn the language. We just started in 2016, following the service model of another Community Education Program who has now grown to service 400 children in their community. Learning English provides these kids with some tools they can use to have more opportunities in their lives and break the cycle of poverty.Extensive knowledge of Spanish is not necessary as you will be assisting the teacher of the class unless you have the necessary skills to lead the class on your own. The thought is that the kids will enjoy the variety and will benefit from having the talents and input of other people. It also allows us to break into smaller groups for practice and activities and enriches the learning environment. If qualified, we would be very interested in someone who has the skills to also run a classroom on their own.
English, French, Spanish
One bedroom suite with kitchenette and large balcony overlooking the river valley and the Bay of Banderas. We are not offering food with this listing but each suite has a kitchen and food is inexpensive and readily available at one of the tiendas in the village. The volunteer ask will never surpass 12 hours a week unless the volunteer chooses to get involved in some other programs and will be no more than 4 days a week.
Take note that there is no night life to speak of in Boca de Tomatlan. Puerto Vallarta is approximately 30 minutes by bus if you want to check out some city life, but if socializing with other ex-pats is a priority, this is probably not the ideal situation for you.
Boca de Tomatlan is the hub of the water taxi pick up. For a few pesos, you can visit the outlying communities and beaches that can only be reached by boat. We are right on the hiking trail to Colomitos, Las Animas and if you and even to Yelapa if you are that ambitious. The ocean here is warm and crystal clear for amazing swimming, snorkelling or scuba diving if you are so inclined. Many excursions form Puerto Vallarta come through our community to visit the many attractions in the area. You would have your own private suite and we are very flexible with the cleaning portion. For example, if you wanted to do more one day to leave yourself with some completely free days, that is no problem. Busses are frequent and inexpensive to go back into Puerto Vallarta or to go further south to explore the more mountainous regions along the coastline.
There is no night life to speak of in Boca de Tomatlan and few ex-pats in the area except during tourist season. Puerto Vallarta is definitely more cosmopolitan and is a 30 minute bus ride away. Busses are frequent and inexpensive. However, if you are not comfortable travelling by bus or exploring on your own, this may not be an ideal posting for you.
