    Description

JULY 2026 - We are currently looking for a solo Workaway (female) who can speak German. We haven't had workaways for a while but are excited to travellers again!

I have a daughter who is in her final year of high school and may want to practise speaking German.
She is at a beginner level so patience is appreciated :)

The tasks will focus on supporting us with housework, cooking and running a happy smooth family household.

VALUED SKILLS - good vegetarian and pescatarian COOKING SKILLS, around the house CLEANING and maintenance skills (e.g. vacuuming, dusting, maintaining the kitchen, cleaning the windows, bathroom, laundry, water plants, re-potting plants, etc).

    ABOUT US
We are a family of three - one mum, two daughters but in July 2026, there will be only 2 of us in the home during your stay. (One daughter is away travelling.) We are a social friendly bunch.

    1) Me (52yo) - I'm a Clinical Psychologist and work most days in my clinic. I like boardgames, mindfulness, and colouring-in mandalas. My hair is recently shaved very short.

    2) My other daughter (18 yo) is completing high school at the end of 2026. In July, she will be on school holidays. So, when she isn't out with friends, op-shopping, or at pilates, then she is home being a fabulous teenager. She might appreciate your company if I'm at work.

    IMPORTANT THINGS
*****Please - Only Suitable for Non-Smokers and Non-Vapers

*****We have a coffee expresso machine! And sauerkraut lol And kombucha if it is ready by then.

    FOOD
*****We are pescatarian. (We don't eat meat.) We prefer to eat meals together if we can.

    SLEEP & YOUR ROOM
*****We can give you a room to yourself but...the bedroom has no windows and there is a gap at the top of one of the walls to allow light in. Please have a LOOK AT THE PHOTOS for a better idea :)

Noise from the lounge room and kitchen is very much present in the bedroom, which is fine if you flow with our rhythms 'cause we aren't an inherently noisy bunch but we get our coffees around 6-8am in the morning.

Our household is up early and we retreat/go to bed early too. We watch TV wearing headphones in our rooms on our own devices. There is not a TV in the lounge (but there is a computer if we want to watch something together).

    COMMUNITY SPIRIT
*****We are an open-minded bunch who like hanging out with other people who don't have fixed ideas about gender, sexuality and family structures. LGBTIQ people are welcome. I am an atheist and left wing. We have crazy good views of the skyline and city from our large balcony. It is a bit cold to hang out there but great for a bit of fresh air and photos :)

You will share a bathroom with my daughter (shower & bathtub).

We have a washing machine & dryer but sometimes the air-dryer is preferable on the balcony.

LOCATED: North Melbourne, near Errol St and near-ish Queen Victoria Market. It take 20 mins to walk into the centre of the city. Tram 57 is our closest tram line and Tram line 58,59 are only a short walk (10 minute) away. But we are also a 10-15 minute walk from two train stations; North Melbourne train station and Arden train station. Bus routes 401, 402, 421 are close-by.

We have various big parks nearby - Royal Park, Exhibition Gardens, Carlton Gardens, Edinburgh Garden, Botanical Gardens, and more.

Hanging out is good and you sharing German language and culture is great.

    THE HOUSE:

CLEANING - dishes, unpacking/packing the dishwasher, windows inside and out, taking out the rubbish (!!!), cleaning the bathrooms, cleaning the fridge, vacuuming, etc.

COOKING - pescatarian and vegetarian is important because we don't eat any red meat. We mostly eat vegetarian food. Sometimes, fish is included but it is more likely to be tofu.

I have a daughter learning German in her final year of high school. She is preparing for an oral exam in October. I was an English as an additional language teacher 20 years ago and worked with remote Indigenous kids and migrant Australians. At uni, I studied a bit of linguistics too, but my German is limited to Duolingo level 12 :) So, we want to learn (speak) German a bit but we really are not as good as you are likely to be at English. If you have patience for learners, then fabulous! toll! I'm barely A1, my daughter is higher...maybe A2/B1-ish.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will get a room to yourself (my daughter who is travelling's bedroom). You will share a bathroom/laundry with my daughter who is home.

Inner Melbourne suburb (postcode 3051) - top floor apartment, large balcony, pescatarian household, GREAT VIEWS of the city!! especially at night!!

The closest attractions to the house are the Queen Victoria Market, the University of Melbourne, Royal Park, and the Melbourne Zoo (Parkville). But having said that, you can easily access anything in Melbourne from our centrally located home.

Tram 57 is our closest tram line and Tram line 58,59 are only a short walk (10 minute) away. But we are also a 10-15 minute walk from two train stations; North Melbourne train station and Arden train station. Bus routes 401, 402, 421 are close-by.

Our wifi is very good (by Australian standards). Wifi is available throughout the home, including on the balcony. We use our computers and devices regularly - usually in our bedrooms because we don't have a TV in the lounge room, so we watch our own shows in our own room. Generally, we are social in the communal space (kitchen & lounge areas) and being in that communal space is not always a good place to work. We wake up early and enjoy our morning coffees. I work a lot out of the house and my daughter goes out plenty too. The bedroom does not have windows and it is worth noting that there is noise and light from the kitchen and lounge area. See the photos of the room and read the description please.
