We are a busy backpacker hostel/ adventure camp located directly on the famous Kappalady Kite surfing lagoon/beach in Kalpitiya peninsula, Sri Lanka. We (Anais and Keira) are slowly building a chill place for travelers and adventures of all kinds to meet, stay, exchange ideas and stories and so on.
This is a full organic project, we started with nothing, just bare land by the beach and lived in a camping tent for about 2 years while we slowly built our place and garden, everything we do is with love and care. We hope to keep working on our place and business but also start projects involving the local farming and fishing community and especially work towards environmental education and preservation, a slow but steady process.
We live in an amazing area. During the summer months (May-Sep) our lagoon is one of the best in the world to kite surf and especially to learn kitesurfing. During the winter months (October-April) Kalpitiya is a marine hot spot. Just off our shore are pods of spinner dolphins up to 1000 strong and numerous other dolphin and whale species, this is also were the largest gathering of sperm whales occurs. There is also some great scuba diving in the area.
We are also very close the amazing and wild Wilpattu National Park where we sometimes visit by vehicle or boat, we are also trying to start camping trips in and around this area.
The place is run by us Anais and Keira. Anais is originally from Barcelona Spain but has traveled all over the world and is an amazing chef. She came to Sri Lanka for a music festival and somehow ended up in in Kappalady, from there a long and amazing story follows and she ended up starting the place which was originally just a small tent, and one traditional fishing bungalow. To keep with style now we have several big tents and a couple modified fishermen style bungalows that make up our rooms and cafe!
Keira came to Kalpitiya to work as a diver and as part of the story goes ended up here with us. He soon joined on the team and brought with him his passion for adventure and nature. Now he helps run the cafe and work on its ever developing garden. He is also now an avid kite surfer and in July 2016 was part of the first team to kite 300km from Kalpitiya to Jaffna. He is now trying to organize regular kite surfing trips from Kalpitiya to the North, anywhere from 1 to 4 days and 100 to 300 km.
We also have a really cool team of around 5 local staff, and 2 really chill funny cats and a dog that everyone loves. Our main staff came here from the local village and this was their first job, they are sill here and now speak english and are multi skilled and some are on their way to becoming a good chef!
Here we are always happy to share our experiences with others and now with Work Away we hope to do this and mutually learn and progress with others. One thing that we can personally share is our story and i guess our alternative lifestyle, Anais and Keira both left Europe/USA in search of something different, life here is amazing, challenging and very hard at times, but always interesting. We are happy to share our knowledge wether it be cooking or outdoor sports, nature or our philosophy or just story's from our travels. Our staff and the people from the village can give you a really good insight into a completely different culture and lifestyle, it is a really good chance to meet people from different walks of life and learn from them as they learn from you too.
People who choose to come and stay with us will have lots of opportunity to explore this amazing area. If you are a kiter looking to work/stay in wind season then this is a excellent opportunity to be right next to the lagoon. The Lagoon front is right at our door step and main kite beach is a 5 min walk. As we are kite surfers also we can share with you some of the super spots and flat water islands in the area.
For travelers looking to meet new people and have new experiences this is a great place to do so any season. We always have many interesting people constantly coming through here. We are also in an excellent location/base to do adventures into the surrounding areas like Wilpattu, Anuradhapura Sigiriya, Jaffna and so on. As we are avid travelers our selves we would love to share ideas and help you plan your next travels, and maybe even travel together!
As of May 2019 we will also be taking over a 7+ acre farm located a couple of kms away. Here we plan to do some experimental farming, organic methods, fruit trees, reforestation and analog forestry, herbs and more. There is space here to experiment on different sustainable practices like solar, water purification... whatever else we can think of.
For people interested in our little camp please contact us and chat, we are happy to answer and questions and give more detailed info. (Ps. Sometimes we are super busy and cannot answer all messages on time) Hope to hear from you. Cheers!

People who stay with us will exchange ideas and stories and experiences with us and the people staying and traveling through. If you have an interest in travel, water sports or just general adventure then this is the place to be. Alternative lifestyle. You will also interact daily with our local staff and also our neighbor who are traditional fishing families from the area. The village is very small and if you spend time walking up the one village road you will soon get to know the people around. This is Sri Lankan village life on the coast, if you are interested we can link you up with some great local people we know so you can see how they live there lives.
We can always use help with the daily running of our camp. There are always various gardening, building and decoration projects and opportunities going on. Most of our structures are made of wood and coconut products and we are trying to create a small forest garden where trees, vegetables and decorative plants are blended together in harmony. So garden, farming and decorating help is always appreciated.
Artists are always welcome!! Our staff and so many travellers who come through have shaped our camp with their artwork decoration and ideas, this place is alive and constantly evolving!
Anyone with construction and building skills also welcome! We have had some people really shape our camp in ways we never thought, if people have skills like carpentry we are always happy to work out a good program.
Video, photo and any digital media skills also welcome, our camp is always changing so every season we need to update and promote. Also we always need some footage of our water sports and safari adventures.
If people have a special interest in in community action like keeping the village clean, or teaching english, sports or environmental education we are happy to help in working together on that. A lot of plastic is washed up from the ocean from time to time and we are constantly doing clean-up and slowly teaching the locals about the danger of plastic waste and trying to get them involved as well.
For our new farm project we will always welcome farm hands and people with an interest in farming and forest gardens. If you have experience in these fields you are more that welcome to come and share ideas, but no experience is required, just a will for hard work and getting your hands dirty.
Since we are sometimes quite busy it would be great if volunteers can talk with the guest and see if they need any thing from us and just to check that things around the camp are running ok, also letting guest know a bit about the area and the interesting things to do.
Basically we are looking for positive and motivated people who have an interest in our area and what we do to come and stay with us and help in any way to keep making our camp a special place. We have been blessed since we started with work away that everyone who has joined us shares our work hard play hard attitude and we have really made some great friends in doing so.
If people are interested in coming long term for the Season June- Sept or Winter Season Dec -Feb please let us know. We would love to talk to you about a possible collaboration depending on your interests and skills. Also in inter-seasons we look of people to stay and act as caretakers and just enjoy our place.
This is a truly amazing area and offers something for everyone!
