Description
Hello! Here Majo, Julia and Elena. We have a woman-led hostel and tourism project located in San Juan La Laguna, Lave Atitlan.
The project was created by Majo as a space to gather community, artists and travelers which makes of our space something very unique and genuine. We work hand on hand with a net of Mayan Tzujutil artists and families therefore, our values are: cultural celebration, sustainability, respect and shared responsability.
The team is led by Majo (Owner), Julia (Agency manager) and Elena (Housekeeper). We work with a network of 8 women and 8 man who are artists, hosts, drivers, tour guides and part of our maintenance team.
We thrive to be intentional with our work, ensuring that tourism here supports local families and honors cultural knowledge. If you volunteer with us it will mean becoming part of this ecosystem, someone that integrates in the daily life of the community.
We’re a flexible team which values openness, communication and care. We’re a small project, so the way we cultivate trust and respect matters. We’re share daily life, meals, conversations and responsibilities all in a way that our environment makes people feel welcome, safe and comfortable.
The hostel is nested in San Juan La Laguna in the non-touristic area offering a calm and grounding space with amazing views of the Mayan Face, which makes it great for slow travel and community living. The volunteers support the daily flow of the hostel through housekeeping, reception support, and maintenance chores.
Also, we run a small tourism agency offering ethical and cultural experiences. Volunteers may also support with guest orientation, storytelling, photography or documenting experiences.
Work schedules are discussed openly, and we make sure there is space for rest, exploration, and personal time.
Volunteering with us will mean to learn sustainable ways to contribute but also, you will have thrilling opportunities such as participate in our daytrips, tours and cultural experiences (when possible), have fun and profound connections with local artists, weavers, cooks, guides and families enriching your staying here. Explore Lake Atitlán through hikes, sunrise viewpoints, kayaking and forest walks, practice your Spanish and integrate to our community.
We’re looking for people who are interested in art, sustainability, ethical travel. Therefore, qualities such as respectful, open-minded and communicative are essential. Thus, comfortable living in shared spaces, responsible, with initiative, curious in local culture and community life.
If this makes you feel excited give us a call and we will be happy to work together.
