Description
Hello, my name is Jakob and I live on a little island in the Finnish archipelago. I have been travelling the world for the past 4 years and have done a lot of workaways during my travels. After a lot of movement and new experiences I now feel the calling to settle down for a little bit and dig my roots down deep in the place where I grew up. I am fortunate to be able to stay in a cabin on an island that my family has been living on mainly during the summer holidays in Finland, what in Finland is called a ”mökki” or ”sommarstuga”. In Finland it’s quite common for people to have a summer cabin somewhere outside of the city where they can enjoy the summers. My plan is to live here more permanently and I would like to invite people who feel called to dive deeper into themselves and the earth, who would like to learn about a simple and sustainable way of living in harmony with nature, who would like to grow spiritually and awaken forgotten memories from the past, to come join me and help create a beautiful space for people to disconnect from the busy and hectic life of society and reconnect with the earth and ourselves.
I offer workawayers the possibility to learn about nature, the plants and animals in this region, fishing, bio-construction, the finnish and swedish language, and mostly just an opportunity to live in the Finnish wilderness for a bit and experience a simple way of living. I like to play music and we often sit around the fire in the evening if the weather allows. We also have a traditional finnish sauna here which we use regularly.Types of help and learning opportunities

Workawayers have the opportunity to get a glimpse of the traditional Finnish culture. The place is located 10 minutes away by boat from the nearest road accesible by car and there is a traditional finnish village there with a small shop, some cafés, a gathering place for village festivities (mainly during the midsummer celebration), and a lot of small houses. My grandmother grew up there. Sometimes I go there to visit family, go to sell at the market or go grocery shopping. Workawayers can join me during these occasions to get a tour of the area. In the free time you can explore the forest, go for a little boat ride, swim in the ocean, and contemplate life. There are a lot of things to do and beautiful places to visit so your imagination is the limit to what you can experience. As I am a traveller myself I love to learn from people with different cultural backgrounds and share stories and skills.
Help
On the island we work together. There are many projects I would like to do so any kind of help is appreciated. The tasks at the moment are mainly art projects, food preparation, and general help around the house and on the island. Workawayers are also welcome to propose their own project ideas and share their skills and talents. We are on the coast of the baltic sea and the weather varies from super calm and sunny to windy and stormy so be prepeared for all kinds of wheater. This is not a place for people who want comfort and city luxuries.

At the moment there are two cabins on the island and a third one is under construction. There is space for a few people to live here. I can offer a private sleeping space for single guests or couples, and a shared dormitory if we are more people. There is also the possibility of sleeping in a tent. I offer food and a kitchen to cook in. We usually eat breakfast, lunch and dinner together but depending on the day sometimes we may eat sepearatly. You are welcome to bring your own food and also share with the other people living here. The local cousine consists mainly of blueberry pie, mushroom stew, fish and potatoes but we also buy groceries at the store to cook some delicious meals.
What else ...
It takes around 40 minutes to get to the harbour from Helsinki and frome there another 10 mintues by boat. The closest town to get to by bus is Porvoo and from there I can pick you up by car. I live in a quite relaxed snd simple way but I value good work and good rest afterwards. I try to balance work and free time and the people staying here will be able to choose quite freely when they want to work but ideally we would find a suitable rythm together. This is a spiritual place so we try to maintain a healthy and supportive atmosphere. Heavy alcohol drinking is discouraged. Acoustic music and authentic conversations are apprecited. My plan is to try to stay here also during the winter but the best time to visit is during the summer for sure.
