🌿 Help bring a creative, low-impact project to life in the Bulgarian countryside

Are you up for a practical, outdoorsy adventure in the hills of Bulgaria?

I’m working on a creative, low-impact building project on my land, designed using permaculture principles and built (eventually) with natural, low-impact materials like straw bale. At the moment, I'm preparing the land and creating some simple infrastructure—and I’d love a hand from people who enjoy working outside and getting stuck in. There’s a mix of practical tasks, creative collaboration, problem-solving and experimentation, and moments of peace under the trees.

    🐕 Who else lives here

My two friendly dogs (girl aged 11 and boy aged 8) are very much part of the place although the boy sometimes needs a little time to feel comfortable around new people and doesn’t like other animals. Help with their care is welcome—feeding, keeping them company, and walking them in the nearby hills if you fancy. The girl loves a good explore and the boy has to stay on the lead.

    🛏️ Accommodation

Due to the building work, I’m prioritising people with camper vans or those happy to sleep in a tent, which I can provide along with a mattress and bedding.

The setup is basic and mostly outdoors. This is not a polished guesthouse—it’s a place in progress. You’ll need to be happy with:

    • Outdoor washing
    • Simple cooking
    • A lot of fresh air and improvisation

That said, there are shady spots to rest, a small pool to cool off in, and a sense of space and calm that's hard to find elsewhere.

    🍲 Food & Rhythm

I provide basic vegan food and you’re very welcome to help or take over if you love to cook. We’ll usually work in the mornings before it gets too hot, then take it easier in the afternoons. I’m flexible and open to finding a rhythm that works for us both.

    💬 Who it suits

This is a great spot for people who:

    • Enjoy practical, outdoor work
    • Don’t mind getting a bit dusty or muddy
    • Are respectful of quiet, space, and simple living
    • Are travelling in a van or happy to camp
    • Can take initiative and work independently when needed
    • Appreciate animals and being around dogs
    • Are curious about ecological design, permaculture, or natural building

I don't smoke but will consider hosting respectful smokers. Do be aware that this part of the world and my project specifically are at risk of wild fires, and I'm trying to create a low-toxicity, clean-air environment for both people and animals.

It’s definitely not the right place for you if you need a lot of structure, home comforts, or constant activity.

    🏡 The local area

The house is in a quiet part of a popular village, with 2 shops and a bar. The nearest town, Chirpan, is around 7km away with a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants, banks, supermarkets, and a fabulous weekly market. There are 3 buses daily into Chirpan, with an extra one on Fridays for the market.

I don't have a television, but there is high speed internet. The garden has a nice view up into the hills. There are many tracks around the village that are great for walking with the dogs.

💬 A few words about me

I’m originally from the UK but have lived in Bulgaria for years. I work from home (very flexibly), and spend the rest of my time working on the land or pottering about with one project or another. I’m into meditation, yoga, walking, playing the ukulele (badly!), reading, and generally being outdoors.

This project is part of a bigger journey toward self-sufficiency, rediscovering creativity, and intentional living—and I really enjoy meeting people who are on their own path of discovery.

    🛠️ What’s happening here?

This is a creative, evolving space rather than a formal building site. The builders have their own site with a big fence! I’m in the garden, experimenting with ideas and making things up as I go along! Depending on the time of your visit, you might help with:

    • Trying out ideas for a simple summer kitchen and outdoor shower
    • Putting together small shelters for storing materials or giving shade to people and dogs
    • Creating and maintaining a small food growing space
    • Helping move boxes and furniture to set up a temporary living and working area
    • Creating little pockets of tranquility in the garden....

You don’t need any special skills—just a willingness to have a go, get your hands dirty, and share in the experience. I’ll be working alongside you, and I always try to match the tasks to your energy, interests, and comfort level.
This isn’t about replacing tradespeople—the main building work will be done by professionals—but I’m keen to share what I’m learning and welcome others who are curious about ecological living, hands-on creativity, and reconnecting with the land.
