    Description

We are Lou (27) and Roy (40) and this is our second workaway project. Our first was the top-rated experience on Salt Spring Island for 12 years. We hosted over 500 Work Awayers and we know how to provide a unique and valuable experience. You can see the reviews of that project and us here ( workaway.info/en/host/341721576664). Our new project is exciting and it is a simple homestead nestled in between mountains and lake, in the great wilderness of the interior or British-Columbia. To get to our home, we will shuttle you on a 10 minute boat ride across the lake. On the other side, you will find the peace, quiet and ultimate nature seclusion and retreat.

We host workawayers because we love human connection, and we want to share and inspire people with our life. You will be part of our family.

Our home is off grid, but we have good internet and electricity provided by a micro-hydro and solar system. We are surrendered by thousands of acres of protected park land. It is a absolute real immersion in nature and its beauty. Around the house are the gardens and forest, that both need some tending and keep us busy most of the day. Like a good homestead, we aim to grow and eat from the land, with some other locals products and staples. we like to cook delicious fresh and healthy food. In free time, the lake can offer many activities, like kayaking to the nearest beach, a sauna and fresh water swimming. The land itself is perfect for relaxing times or adventures like reading in the hammock, hikes, yoga...The house has a beautiful art studio that can be utilized for creative projects. It is a place to find peace.

The nearest town is small and charming, and not so far, where we can get most of what we need. It is a 10 minute boat ride and 10 minute drive, and we are going often for library, gas or food run.

Both of us are experienced permaculture based farmers and able to share knowledge about homesteading; growing food, preservation, herbalism and medicine making, seed saving, garden building, building, fixing and maintaining. We are also yoga teachers and artists in our own ways.

In between to two of us, we hope that you leave our place inspired, with some knowledge about nature, and a sense of peace.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Connection with wilderness and the nature of the Interior or British Columbia will be most of the cultural and learning experience.
We hope to teach you how to create a sustainable relationship, mutually beneficial with the land, and the land itself will do most the work.
This lifestyle will also teach you a lot about yourself and give you the quietness of slow living which reveals a lot about who we are.
It is a personal growth oriented experience, based in nature.
It is a isolated ( with some social activities around) but mostly you will have the opportunity to connect to yourself and maybe even find the inspiration create project of your own and work on them in a quiet environment.
And of course, Roy and Lou are always happy to have great conversation and share some friendship and playfulness to whoever comes in their home, and yours as you are here.

  • Help

    Help

A homestead is a way of life, and you will be helping us with all our daily tasks to keep our home thriving with food, heat, water and love.
We will do landscaping, vegetable growing, food preservation and forestry maintenance and clean-up tasks, as well as taking care of the home and ourselves ( cooking and cleaning).
We believe in personal responsibility and sustainability and growing our own food is one of the main focuses. Because of our background is permaculture based farming in our previous project, we will integrate and pass on the knowledge that we think so important for this planet and food systems.
We also like when work comes out of curiosity and creative ideas. There is a lot of space for you to decide what you want to learn or create. Lets make this space better for whomever comes next!
We are focusing on growing perennials and medicinal plant depending on the season, you might help preserve or make medicine.
We aim to always host at least 2 Work Awayers so you will not be alone.

    Accommodation

Depending on availability we have comfortable camping and bunkbeds/beds in a nearby shared cabin building.
Tents are big ( you can stand in them) and have mattress and bedding and space for all your stuff. We use compost toilets and a warm water outdoor shower.

We love food, we love to grow it, cook it, preserve it, and be creative. We love when travelers bring their traditional or favorite recipes!

We will procure all the meals and you might help to cook one of them everyday especially if you feel inspired.
We like to cook bread everyday and eat lots of healthy balanced meals with some homemade treats.
We eat primarily vegan/vegetarian and we strive to eat organic and mostly what is local and seasonal.
We have delicious water (yes water can be delicious) coming from a glacier creek in the backyard.
We grow the best raspberries in the region and hope you will get to snack on them!

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Our home is a sober place and we seek to share with other sober people. There is no cell-service but good high speed internet to keep you connected.
You will depend on us for transportation since it is boat access, but we will make sure that you can always get to where you need and will always offer you to come to town with us when we leave, around twice a week.
It does feel like a retreat and hope you can take this advantage to slow down and create in this world of busyness.
