    Update 10th September 2019

Looking for two strong volunteers, probably Male? I need to restore my river defences..putting large rocks in a couple of areas of my river frontage. Like building a dry stone wall, then backfilling with loose stone and soil. Yes, I have a JCB and Dumper truck, but still need some manual work to do the job correctly!

Also, the Olive Harvest will take place at the end of October, beginning of November..need help with this...

Many Thanks For Reading This.. Why not get in touch if you feel you might be able to help?

    Regards Knicki x

    Update 24th November 2017

So....The Olive Harvest is now finished! I never got any volunteers, but my two neighbours, andI, together with some friends, picked our Olives and finally got 100 litres of Extra Virgin, Ecological Olive Oil of Top Quality between us! Now it's just "Tidy Up Time" before Winter Sets in! Unfortunately my car just died and I am isolated for food shopping etc until I can replace it with another car...I will probably have to travel by public transport to Lisbon to do this! As such the immediate future is "up in the Air" as regards Volunteer Helpers! Still Warm and Sunny days with no rain yet! Just pottering about.....Knicki x

    Update 7th October 2017

Hi! It's looking like we should start The Olive Harvesting a little earlier this year? Perhaps You could help from anytime after 21st/28th October? Regards Knicki

    Update 28th August 2017

Sadly my Partners boat, Beleza, has now been sold! Barry continues to stay in a Care Home in the UK, regrettably still paralysed on his left side.

I am looking for Volunteers to help me with the Olive Harvest in Late November, Early December. It looks like it is going to be a particularly good year!

Also, I need strong men to help me finish the flood defences at my little harbour and to relocate my pontoon and construct a walkway to the land so that I have easy access at all states of the tide!

My Case Backhoe Digger has lost its forward/backward drive and requires fixing so as to finish work on the dock area and landscape the Estate. Any clever mechanics out there?

    Keep The Faith? Knicki

    Update! 21st September 2016

Sadly my Man Barry is still in the UK recuperating from his stroke! So, at the moment there is only Me and the Animals. I am hoping to continue restoring the boat and continue to make improvements/maintain the land. The boat wheelhouse needs varnishing, inside and out, the rest of the boat has been completed. All the internal infrastructure needs to be overhauled, 12 volt wiring, plumbing etc. On the land the solar system has been completed so I am now self sufficient in electricity and water from the boreholes. The bunkhouse requires finishing, but is habitable. My Case Backhoe Digger has lost its forward/backward drive and requires fixing so as to finish work on the dock area and landscape the Estate. Olive Harvest approaches and I will need help with that mid to late October. Plenty of different things to do! Still Sunny and warm!

Knicki has a redundant vineyard in Alcoutim on the Rio Guadiana that has lain dormant for 40 years, and she needs help with landscaping, construction, solar and planting projects

Barry has a Nauticat 44 sailing yacht moored adjacent to the vineyard and it is in need of more tlc than he can give. It is currently undergoing a keel upwards restoration that needs loads of varnishing, engineering, electrical and upholstery work

In short, He needs help tidying up the boat, sanding down and varnishing the woodwork, bringing the heads and galley up to scratch, plus a whole load of odds and ends that have finally beaten me!

For those who prefer a land based experience, the vineyard now needs re-planting and olive trees need pruning , a polytunnel needs setting up and a whole host of agricultural projects need starting.

We are currently building a bunkhouse/ guesthouse for friends and workawayers, its currently roofed, walled and wired but with doors windows plumbing yet to go in though workawayers prefer to sleep in its unfinished form rather than camp out!

  • Help

In addition to the above, anyone with expertise in setting up an internet site, would be a help. A project we are looking at on the land is the setting up of a solar power system for the vinyard as power is currently by Generator, Water is pumped up from a borehole and a system for the distribution of this to the vines is needed.

We have a dozen chickens, a couple of puppies recently rescued, a cat who has never set paw off the boat, and rules it with a claw of steel, three Quinta cats, and a couple of goats.

Latest update is that the local carnivores have run off with three of my hens, cheeky devils!

On the upside we now have a small polytunnel to bring plants on over the coming months with plans for another slightly larger one next month.

We now have a JCB, and dumper to help tame the wild backland and a veteran mini tractor with rotovator to take out some of the backbreaking spadework.

next project this week is to install a washing macine, with hot water for the shower, sheer luxury! 30 Nov 2014 project done dog pound built now for the solar array!

on the family front its a great environment for kids, we´ve just finished a tree house overlooking the river including swings, one of knickis whims!

  • Accommodation

Currently we live in a static caravan on site, but wish to improve on this. one of the early projects is the construction of a bathroom, the building up, the shower is in, the cold water is on but the bath, wc, & basin need installing, that is currently ongoing.

Camping is an option, the land is flat and clear, alternatively there is more civilised accommodation available on board the yacht. but that is compromised by the restoration project so meals are generally taken on the caravan deck

Internet access is freely available and unlimited in the Library or the Riverside Tavern in Alcoutim a couple of miles from the Quinta. I must say the mobile phone access on the land is dire, but good elsewhere.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

There is a good music scene here in Alcoutim. any musicians would be welcome. There´s a Zip line that runs from a hill in Spain, over the river to land in Portugal. Spain, in the guise of the Village of San Lucar de Guadiana is but a 1 euro ferry trip of 300 metres.

For those intrepid foot travellers, a train runs from Faro, ( a common arrival point, taxi airport to station around ten euro) to Villa Real de San Antonio, around seven euro single, and half that for students and pensioners, then a bus from VRSA to Alcoutim, but we are often in VRSA so a pickup from there is an option. train usually takes about hour and half all along the eastern algarve coast.

    An Update!

We currently have two lovely young people with us from Workaway, and we are managing to get through so much more. Now I can start on the boat!

    Update June 2015
well I left the Finca for a month to help a friend with re-engineing his yacht, so work slowed down a bit, Pedro the Pig unfortunately died and was buried (not BBQ´d I wish to make clear). The Vet shrugs her shoulders and says íts a Pig´, On a positive note we now have two new Kittens curtesy of the vet, and they are gorgeous. Luna the boat cat, after a wild weekend on the pontoon in Alcoutim would appear to be pregnant, so watch this space!

    Update, Sept 2015
Work on rebuilding the boat going well, bunkhouse nearing completion, we now have 220v and a solar array so the washing machine is now viable, the caravan deck has now a roof on it so we can dine outside in comfort and the dock area is now almost finished, one I get the tractor repaired it will be time to reinstate the garden, and get some plants in.

    Update November 2015

Thanks workawayer Wybo, whose unstinting assistance means we now have pontoon and beleza is looking even better, the jcb is being fixed as I write and the tractor too

    Update Feb 2016

The Final solar panels are now installed at the casa Knicki power station, we now have the power to run what ever we want! and then some to spare. work on the guest quarters continue apace we have the floor down and beds in and now fitting the shower room/w.c etc now is coming up planting time so volunteers are needed for the garden and vinyard.

    Update May 10th 2016

Sad news! My partner, Barry, had a Stroke (a bloodclot in the brain) on March 27th whilst visiting Family and Friends in the UK. He is currently in The Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at Halifax Hospital, UK. He is paralysed on his left side and needs 24/7 care. The good news is that he seems to be recovering some ability. He moved his toes for the first time last Sunday! If he is ever to return to Portugal he needs a large degree of mobility and some degree of independence. Our environment, being the boat and farm, does not lend itself to wheelchair access. Wybo, a Dutch Guy who came on Workaway last year, has returned and the interior varnishing of the boat is now almost complete! It is my intention to continue the work restoring/upgrading the boat, with rewiring, upgraded bathrooms, galley etc. Obviously, being alone now means I cannot look after my Quinta and the boat and make significant progress on both. I need Urgent Help and Assistance! Summer has arrived now, but it is not yet too hot....... the vineyard needs immediate work if I am to get a Harvest this year, make some wine for Sale and get sorely needed funds! Contact me asap for more Info....

Thank You for reading/visiting our site! Knicki xxx
