  • Description

    Description

    We are a complementary couple.
    Barbara, Belgian, is more extroverted.
Christian, Swiss, from the world of technology is more reserved.
We share the conviction that we should return to a more sober and warm way of life.
Our common language is French. But at least one of us speaks German, English, Dutch, Italian or Greek.

We live in the Belgian Ardennes, in an old watermill that we are renovating with respect to its environment and our values.

The objective of our place is to: develop, test, live, promote, share around low-tech, degrowth, autonomy, eco-logical and societal transition.

    **************

The mill is located 1km away from the center of the village, living there offers an experience of the life in the middle of nature. It's a beautiful place to go hiking, jogging in the woods and along the Semois river. During your stay we also will be happy to share with you our knowledge about eco-building, agro-ecology and the complex functioning of Belgium.

Depending on the period, you will be able to learn about the construction of a resilient thermal heating system, a phytodepuration system, water management by reactivating the old millstream, electricity production by means of a hydraulic turbine, the construction of a methanisation installation, the construction of dry stone walls, the techniques of earth and straw insulation and the laying of clay plaster, the planting of an orchard, the preparation of a vegetable garden and its maintenance in agroecology, manual mowing.

We slowly arrive at the end of the renovation work in the main building. If your have carpenter skills you are most welcome :-)

But in general, your work will be more oriented outside in the vegetable garden or in the woods.
    -----

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Your rooms are located in the part that was used as a gîte before we took over the Moulin.
We live in a small chalet next door.

    Bedding, duvets, pillows are provided.
There is a bathroom with shower and as on the rest of the site, a separate dry toilet.
The gîte is in a white zone (little mobile network) but has an internet connection.

The menus are determined and made together, according to the desires and affinities of the participants.
    A wash machine is available.
    ---

  • What else ...

    What else ...

The site is relatively isolated. There is a train station 15 minutes drive from the mill where we can pick you up.
We are very conscious of our ecological footprint, so we try to minimise our waste and we invite all our guests to do the same. We favour organic, healthy and mostly vegetarian cuisine.
Le Moulin is located on a hiking trail and 4 kilometres from tourist resorts of Alle-sur-Semois or Rochehaut and their entertainment (restaurants, canoeing, .... ). The village's festival committee regularly organises events, concerts, exhibitions and even a dance and music festival.

If nature watching is one of your passions, you will be in heaven, as beavers, wild boars, deer, bats, raccoons, salamanders and kingfishers are also among our guests.
If you like swimming in cold water, the 2 ponds and the river are waiting for you :-)

    *****************

There is the large gravelled courtyard in front of the barn. Connection to water and electricity is then possible. For a wilder experience, it's possible to stay on a meadow 600m away from the Mill and in total autonomy.
