We´re a horse barn located within a private reserve in the Lake District region. Our primary mission is to celebrate the Chilean horse, a symbol of the countryman's heritage, by placing a strong emphasis on animal welfare and reviving the tradition of exploring the land on horseback, just as it was done in the past.

We offer immersive tours and classes to hotel guests within the reserve, where we not only showcase the beauty of the Chilean horse but also train them to engage in various equestrian activities. Our aim is to reconnect people with the land and its history through the art of horse riding, preserving a tradition that embodies the spirit of adventure and discovery.

This is a 3,000 hectare private reserve where a luxury tourist operation operates. This is on the coast of the region so there are many activities related to the sea. And also go hiking inside the reserve. We are 40 km from Los Muermos (closest town) and 90 km from Puerto Montt (capital city of the Lake District). El Tepual airport is located 80 km from the property (1 hour and a half by car from the airport) There is public transportation to Los Muermos and from there to Puerto Montt. It is a very touristy area and considered by many the beginning of Patagonia in Chile.

Nos encontramos a 40 kms de los Muermos (pueblo más cercano) y a 90 kms de Puerto Montt ( ciudad capital de la Región de los lagos). El aeropuerto el Tepual se encuentra a 80 kms de la propiedad (1 hora y media en vehículo desde el aeropuerto)
Hay transporte Público hasta los Muermos y desde allí a Puerto Montt.
Es una zona muy turística y considerada por muchos el inicio de Patagonia en Chile.

Our volunteering experience took place in November, at the very beginning of the tourist season. The work mainly involved preparing the horses for rides (bringing them in from the pasture, cleaning them, saddling them), cleaning the stalls, and keeping the stables clean and organized (cleaning/greasing the saddles, tidying tools). Additionally, we helped with preparing new paddocks and clearing trails when needed. The amount of work varied and was largely tied to the hotel's tourism. Marco is very open to new initiatives and additional projects you may bring :) On our end, we were involved in creating video and photo content for the Hacienda and the hotel, which kept us busy in addition to our daily tasks at the stables. This was an incredible opportunity to meet new people and learn more about the local culture of the huasos and gauchos.

There are two accommodation options for volunteers: one near the stables (in a shared house with other workers/volunteers) and one 2 km away (about 25 minutes by foot) at the Farm House. We stayed at the Farm House, a small, rustic yet cozy house located right next to the reserve's large vegetable garden. We absolutely loved the place and its atmosphere!

You are entitled to three meals a day (the food is excellent!) and can order extra ingredients/products once a week. There is a Tupperware system for the few people living at the Farm House, so they can eat at home without needing to walk 2 km to the cafeteria. This system is very convenient!

Here are some more general things to keep in mind:

- The rains in this region are frequent and intense, so make sure to bring a good raincoat and sturdy shoes (rain boots and work jackets are also available at the stables).

- Marco is a true horse enthusiast, very knowledgeable and interesting, and an excellent teacher. If you love horses, you’ll be thrilled.

- This is an incredible place for amazing hikes and discovering exceptional biodiversity.

In addition to the Hacienda, the property has a hotel and a vegetable garden where about forty people work. Be sure to talk to them, they are all incredibly friendly, caring, and passionate about what they do! :)

I stayed at Hacienda Parga from the end of May 2024 until mid July. This was the off-season for the hotel, so guests were infrequent and there were no rides with tourists. Still, Marco was kind enough to take us on a few rides so we could see the trails. Work primarily consisted of feeding horses, cleaning, turning horses in and out, and some… read more training. I was very fortunate to be at Hacienda Parga for the arrival of a foal, so many of the daily tasks revolved around taking care of the mare and foal. I would recommend the off-season to people who are looking for a more laid back position with lots of downtime at the stables throughout the day. However, if you are a person who needs to stay busy or prefers more structure, I would recommend timing your stay for the high season.

I lived in the farmhouse for the majority of my time. The farmhouse has three bedrooms in total, with a shared bathroom, kitchen, and living area. Carolina from the hotel’s spa is the primary resident of the farmhouse, but she was away for the winter when I was there. I really enjoyed the farmhouse because it provides more of a sense of home than the other housing on property, which is dormitory style. The farmhouse feels very tranquil and private in comparison.

The farmhouse is of old, picturesque construction, but this also means it has no insulation and no heating system. There is a wood stove in the living area, so it’s best if you know how to make a fire. Still, the building doesn’t hold heat well, so even with a fire it will never be very warm inside. The stove also doesn’t do much to heat the bedrooms. There were several mornings where I woke up to see my breath freezing in the air and the water bottle beside my bed frozen. All of this to say, if you visit during the winter, you will need warm clothes for outside, but also warm clothes for inside and sleeping.

On the note of clothes, a good rain jacket, rain pants, and waterproof boots are necessities for the winter. It will rain almost everyday for at least some period of time. Admittedly, I was prepared for the rain, but I really underestimated how severe the wind would get. We had days where the wind was comparable to the hurricane-force winds I have experienced growing up in Florida. This will result in periodic power outages. The longest I experienced was three days. There may also be power outages at the farmhouse caused by the old construction/wiring rather than the weather. Hot water and wifi at the farmhouse are intermittent. The good news is that the kitchen stove is gas, so you can cook even when the power is out.

Another thing to keep in mind with the farmhouse is that it is a 35 to 45 minute walk from the stables, main lodge, and cafeteria. The walk is fine in good weather, but unpleasant when the rain and wind pick up. There isn’t reliable transportation between the farmhouse and stables, but sometimes Marco may pick you up, and other times you may be able to catch lifts with hotel staff. My recommendation is to find out when Daniela, the chef and farmhouse neighbor, returns home in the afternoons and try to catch a ride with her. The morning lifts are more complicated because they are subject to which hotel staff members are working and who has the truck.

Daniela and the other kitchen staff are really kind about accommodating the people living up at the farmhouse. Once a week, you can request items to have breakfast at the farmhouse. You can also send a tupperware to the kitchen to have dinner sent up with Daniela. The food at the cafeteria is great. It’s exactly the kind of food you want when working outside during the winter - lots of meat, potatoes, rice, pasta, and stews. They accommodate vegetarians with good substitutions.

The last thing I want to comment on is the safety. I never felt unsafe or uncomfortable during my eight weeks. The barn is very isolated, so the only people around are the hotel staff members. Everyone was very kind, warm, and respectful in my experience. I highly recommend arriving with some level of Spanish proficiency so that you can build more meaningful relationships and feel more integrated into the community at the barn

I have spent the month of January at this place and time has flown by so fast, because of how absolutely amazing the experience was! First of all, Marco is one of the kindest people you'll ever meet. He puts a lot of effort into making you feel welcome, introducing the place, the work and the people to you and making sure you're having a good… read more time. At the same time, when he sees you are experienced and comfortable handling and riding the horses, he gives you a lot of trust and freedom in what you do, often allowing us (me and the other volunteer who was staying at the same time) to also ride by ourselves and trusting the place to us when he had to go away for a few days. It was amazing to ride and work with him, to learn from his experience as a veterinarian and overall great rider.

The work itself did actually not feel like work at all. There is only a very small amount of daily chores to be done. The rest of your "work" time is spent on prepping for and sometimes riding along with guest rides; riding with Marco or by ourselves to train the horses and keep them fit; doing groundwork such as lunging and leading the horses on hand-walks to prepare the young ones for riding; and whatever other fun ideas Marco or you come up with: he is very open to your own input and suggestions. During my time here I have ridden nearly every day, sometimes twice or even three times a day. The riding is done on trails and/or the beach and the horses are all so well behaved and surefooted. Animal welfare is the highest priority at this place and the way the horses are kept, treated and ridden is of a very high standard.

We also had a lot of free time, usually we would do an early morning ride, then have some time to ourselves before and after lunch and gather again for e.g. a guest activity towards the end of the afternoon. During this time you are free to explore the amazing hikes that this absolutely stunning place has to offer. We would sometimes hang out with the staff working at the hotel: hiking, playing volleyball and making bonfires at the beach. All the people that work at the hotel are wonderful, so friendly, welcoming and passionate about the place they work at. Most of the people do speak some English and were also very willing to help me work on my Spanish. When you want to work on learning / improving your Spanish here I would recommend already making sure to have a solid basis, because Chileans speak very fast and sometimes swallow letters or syllables, so if you don't already have some basis (which I did not really have) it's fairly hard to understand which made them (so very much appreciated) usually switch to English for me.

Regarding food, accommodation and logistics: I was generally very comfortable staying at this place. There are two different places a volunteer can stay depending on availability: at the farm house (where me and the other volunteer shared a room), which is very cosy, has a shared bathroom, kitchen and living room and is situated at the beautiful vegetable/flower garden; or in a room at the wings where the workers are accommodated, which also has shared facilities. The farm house is a 20 minute walk away from the main lodge (where three meals per day are served) and stables, but sometimes Marco would pick us up in the morning if we had an early ride. There is also a paddock near the house so some nights we rode two of the horses up at night and back in the morning, a very fun way of 'commuting' ;) The worker accommodation wings are much closer but tend to be a little noisier. Things that may be handy to bring: snacks if you want to eat in between the three meals; beer/wine if you want to drink this; laundry detergent if you're staying at the farmhouse and light coloured clothes if you're coming in summer (there are stinging horseflies which are more attracted to dark colors). There is no cell reception in most of the reserve but there is wifi at the accommodation and the lodge. For me this was perfect to disconnect from the hectics of digital life for a month.

Words simply cannot describe how amazing this experience has been, thank you so much Marco for having me as a volunteer! If I someday have the opportunity to come back, I absolutely will.

I can also only speak to how things are entering the low season (fall-winter). The amount of activity and staff and at the lodge/stables varies depending on the season - during high season the… read more lodge is more booked with longer and busier days, low season is rainier and colder but more free time. Something to consider!

Every day had the core routine of opening up the stables, feeding and turning out the horses, walking and feeding Chiquiperro, grooming, tacking up and riding (either ourselves or with/for guests, weather-dependent), mucking out, and bringing the horses in at the end of the day. Beyond this, the days really varied. Riding on the beaches, cliff trails and forest, lunging or other forms of training or care with the horses, visiting the farm, longer rides throughout the property.. it’s a spectacular place, one of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve spent time in, whether on horseback or foot it’s amazing to explore.

There are tons of projects to work on at any given time; bushwhacking to maintain and create new trails and lookouts, repairing or setting up new pastures, moving the horses between pastures, maintaining tack, other projects around the stables and property, etc. If you’re looking for a place to hang out and relax or do remote work, this might not be the best fit. If you have any skills/talents, there are so many opportunities to contribute and I'd urge anyone considering coming here to give back to this place any way that you can!

It’s hard to say what I’ve missed the most since leaving - the natural beauty, unlimited time with 9 amazing horses, the wonderful people at Mari Mari, morning bonfires with Clara and Trupi, hugs from Chiqui - but if I had to choose, it would probably be the excitement and freedom to try new things and learn. A lot of this comes down to Marco’s openness to new projects, enthusiasm to go on any adventure, and generosity with his time and knowledge. He’s an extraordinary teacher, so if you are keen to learn - horsemanship, horse physiology, farrier skills, Chilean horse culture and history - you can get so much out of this experience.

I am so grateful to Marco, Cristina and everyone at Mari Mari, it bears repeating how kind everyone here is.

Marco is incredibly kind and passionate about his work. I… read more learned a lot from him about training horses and horse care, as he’s a vet. He was always checking in to make sure I was comfortable and that I was enjoying the experience, which I always was!

There are 9 horses at the stables and the daily work is taking care of them- feeding twice a day, turning them out into pasture and mucking stalls. Once the horses were taken care of in the morning we would go for a ride in the forest or on the beach! Sometimes we helped with other projects like putting up fence, organizing the stables or cleaning tack. We then had the afternoon off which I usually spent hiking, walking the dogs, exercising or just relaxing.
Marco is great at working with all levels of riders. But being comfortable with handling horses is important since you will be working with them everyday.

I was at the stables during the “off season” so we didn’t have a lot of guests. If you’re there in the high season/ summer, I’d except the daily routine to vary more in order to accommodate guest rides.

Marco is a great communicator and is very helpful accommodating your pick up and drop off. The preserve is very remote so be prepared with everything you might need before arriving. Shampoo, toothpaste, warm layers, rain coat, sunscreen, etc. But if you need something while you’re there, ask Marco. For example, I was there during the rainy season and Marco got me rain boots to borrow during my time there.

The food is really good, like homestyle Chilean cooking. But if you like fresh fruit and veggies they are limited there so if you need that in your diet I’d recommend stocking up on some non-perishables before arriving. I brought apples, bananas, clementines, etc. Also the meals are at set times so if you’re a snacker or have a sweet tooth I’d bring some snacks along or whatever you might crave. There’s no fridge for staff so just bring non-perishables. If you’re there for a few weeks or longer you can definitely coordinate with Marco to go to town to restock.

The accommodations are dorm style (two beds per room) and female/ male bathrooms. They have a washer/ dryer for the staff but only one set for all the staff so sometimes you have to wait a while to do laundry- make you bring enough clothes to get you through a week or so. Also since you’re working with horses, it’s easier to just embrace the horse smell. wifi is very intermittent so if you work remotely this likely is not a convenient workaway for you. I downloaded a bunch of movies and books before I arrived and that was helpful.

Overall it was a truly incredible experience. It was my first workaway so I can’t compare it to anything else but it truly set the bar high for any other Workaway. Everyone is so so kind and Marco is truly one of the nicest people I have ever met. If you are thinking about this workaway make sure you can commit to a set time to work there. Marco relies on the Workawayers so if you bail or change your plans last minute that can put him in a hard spot. But I promise, you won’t regret your time here!

j'ai passé deux petites semaines avec Marco, qui sont passés comme deux heures, c'est une expérience semblable à un rêve, on se demande si cela c'est vraiment passé.

Et ensuite parce que le contact avec les chevaux fait de ce "travail" une expérience à part entière, c'est une première pour moi et Marco a su me transmettre toute sa passion et sa délicatesse envers ses compagnons. Et quand on se retrouve avec les chevaux en bord de mer, on remet vite en question sa perception du travail ;).

L'échange a été si intéressant parce que :
- j'apprends l'espagnol et Marco le français.
- je voulais travailler la photo et Marco a besoin de contenu pour présenter son activité.
- je voulais en apprendre plus sur les chevaux, et Marco a besoin d'aide sur les préparations et la gestion de l'écurie.

Je vous conseille d'y aller les yeux fermés et de prévoir du temps, parce que Marco sera en faire une expérience inoubliable.
J'espère revenir un jour, nos vemos !

Primero porque la reserva marido-marido está muy aislada, una vez que entras es difícil salir, pero no quieres, allí tienes todo lo que necesitas, y es uno de los paisajes más mágicos que he visto y el personal es acogedor.
Y luego porque el contacto con los caballos hace de este "trabajo" una experiencia en sí misma, es la primera vez para mí y Marco supo transmitirme toda su pasión y su delicadeza hacia sus compañeros. Y cuando te encuentras con caballos a orillas del mar, te cuestionas rápidamente tu percepción del trabajo ;).

El intercambio fue tan interesante porque :
- Yo estoy aprendiendo español y Marco está aprendiendo francés.
- Yo quería trabajar en fotografía y Marco necesita contenidos para presentar su actividad.
- Yo quería aprender más sobre caballos y Marco necesita ayuda con los preparativos y la gestión del establo.

Os aconsejo ir con los ojos cerrados y hacer tiempo, porque Marco hará que sea una experiencia inolvidable.

Describing my time at this work away is going to be a challenge, because it has been so amazing and I’m struggling to find the right words but I’m going to give it a try.

I stayed with Marco for a month in October 2022. We had been talking about my arrival a few months in… read more advance and he gave very accurate information about the place, the tasks and the things I could expect here.

He picked me up from Puerto Varas, very nice of him and an easy way to arrive in a new place.

The stables are inside a beautiful nature reserve. It’s impossible the describe the place, I think it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been (and I’ve travelled a lot). Amazing trails to explore, the sunsets are breathtaking, 8 beautiful horses to work with, and Marco is one of the nicest persons I’ve met.

The work was mainly around horses, keeping the stables clean, feeding them and I had the opportunity to ride every day, often multiple times. The horses are amazing, all unique and they have a very good life here. Marco is amazing with his horses, very caring, he has a lot of knowledge about training methods, their physics and takes incredible good care of them. We could talk about them, their training, development and so on for hours.
If there were guests I had the opportunity to come along on the rides, but we had a lot of time to work and train with the horses as well. For me it didn’t feel like work, as I like to be around/work with horses a lot. I think this work away can be very interesting for people that are used to be around horses, have (some) knowledge about training methods and want to develop their skills. There is a lot you can learn here.

I stayed in a private room during my time here and shared the bathroom with the girls that live in the same wing. In busy times you might be sharing the room. The other people working here have been very welcoming, friendly and I enjoyed spending my free hours with them going on hikes, explore the area, have a drink. Three meals a day are provided, I’m vegetarian and I enjoyed the food. It’s tasteful, plenty and a lot of variation during my stay.

To prepare I would suggest to bring whatever you might need during your stay because you’ll need transportation to get to the closest town to buy things and it’s about an hour away from the property. It would be easy to bring some cash so you could ask people to bring stuff for you that you might need or miss of they go to town.

Marco was very flexible about the option to have days off, I didn’t take any because I really enjoyed my stay here and I had plenty of time to explore the area after my stay (I’m traveling for four months).
Marco takes really good care of the people that come here as a work awayer.

I can’t thank Marco (and of course Cristina, the other nice people I met here, the horses and the doggies Clara & Trupie) enough for the possibility to stay in this magical place for a month and I really hope I’ll be able to come back here. It really felt like a home away from home and I’m going to miss it a lot!
