Right now I m looking for help from mid july for a few weeks -we start the last bit of our house build in May but there are gardening jobs and animal husbandry jobs that need doing on a daily basis - not much to be fair - its just I m too busy now to do them!
Hi there - I live with my husband on an organic, small holding in the Blackdown hills - on the border between Somerset, Devon and Dorset.
We ve only been here 6 years having moved from Brighton when my kids left home. We re doing a barn conversion ourselves which is nearly finished and have an extensive garden that is relatively young so seems to require endless work! My husband is a builder but also collects and restores vintage vehicles and caravans. I was a theatrical prop maker/ set builder in a previous fun life and now I would like to be able to start making things again but seem to have all these smallholdery type chores in the way! We have 5 pigs , 4 sheep, 2 dogs, 1 cats and 6 chickens. I don't eat any of them - they're all pets and I enjoy ensuring they have happy lives .
We also have a vintage caravan that is rented out during the summer and so there's always people around- friends visiting - things going on. - all my accommodation is in caravans though until the house is built but we have all mod cons - electric , Internet, t.v , flushing toilets , showers, games rooms etc etc - As well as a peaceful, pretty location !
There's a shop and pub a mile or so away which you can walk to but other than that a car is really handy to get you off the hill and into civilization. We have 3 good sized towns all within a 15 minute drive. The beach and the Jurassic coast are a 35 minute drive away too.
I need a hand watering the plants , building a walls ( moving stones) , painting , dog walking and sometimes ironing or cleaning . I don't expect you to do much in a day - it's pretty relaxed here but you need to be good at entertaining yourselves after that as I ll be working til dark most nights so don't have much time to take you out n about. This is why your own car is essential - If you have your own thing to live in too - that's great - if not i can provide a caravan - you ll have to share our toilet/shower though.
Really this would suit a couple - or singleton , looking for a base from which to explore the south west of Britain . I wont be providing food every night - some nights for sure but not regularly.
If you think this may suit then please get in touch.
Thanks Clare :)
Language skills if English is not their first language.
Building skills if they help on the house and gardening skills if they help in the garden.
On days off they are encouraged to explore the local area to get a feel for the less touristy parts of Britain - aswell as being shown the famous points of interest .
Experience life as a local and not someone just passing through by being part of an informal, warm, friendly , family environment as opposed to a work based setting.
This year I really need help for April through to September as I need to go back to work.
You need to be capable of doing the chores on your own as I won't always be with you.
Mostly it ll be gardening - cutting grass, watering greenhouse, strimming, picking veg as its ready and processing it.
Then there's the animals - dogs need walking , pigs need feeding and tummy s rubbed, eggs need collecting, hen house needs cleaning out.
Maybe I ll need help getting the floor down in our barn - finishing painting or doing some pointing of the stone work
Then there's ironing - which I usually save for a rainy day but sometimes if we have lots of guests staying that takes ages.
That's about it really.
English , a little Spanish and a little French and a little BSL
Caravan - has a double bed, fridge , cooker , tv . use of a shower / bath and toilet .
You can be relatively self contained in your caravan .
You are pretty much in control of your day - the work load is fairly light so you have to be good at entertaining yourselves- we ve got bikes so you can explore locally , dvd s, table tennis, play stations, games and books to read.
I prefer couples for that reason - it's hard playing table tennis on your own!
So I also prefer people with their own transport - we have bikes but we re on the top of a hill so although going down seems fun , coming up is a different matter.
There's the coast 30 mins away, Exeter 40 mins away, cheddar gorge 40 mins away and Bristol 80 mins away. And NO local transport. I can give you lifts to town but I m not always available so the more independent you are the happier I am!
