    Description

Over 20 years ago, my American husband and I bought and restored an old tower house in the beautiful countryside near Todi, in Umbria. We created a peaceful rural home surrounded by nature, olive trees, and vineyards.
Along the way, we also started producing natural wine on a very small scale, and our lives became deeply connected to the rhythms of the land.

Ev is no longer with me in this adventure, but his spirit is present in everything we built together. Over the years, a beautiful community of helpers and friends has grown around this place — many return year after year and have become like family. You might meet some of them during your stay.

I live with two big dogs and three cats, so animal lovers are especially welcome.

    Help Needed

If you’re looking to disconnect from city life and learn what it means to live simply and sustainably — this could be the right place for you.

Please note: this is a countryside home and organic environment — insects, spiders, and the occasional scorpion are part of the ecosystem. If that makes you uncomfortable, this may not be the best fit.

    Living Here

We offer you a welcoming home, healthy meals, and the chance to live in a truly international and inspiring environment. Communication in English or Italian is essential, and a minimum stay of four weeks is preferred, especially during the busy seasons.

We follow a sustainable lifestyle and value people who are curious, respectful, and open to learning. There’s no need for previous experience, but a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and a genuine love for nature go a long way.
Please let me know about allergies or special food requirements beforehand.

    Opportunities for Learning

While the help we ask for is around my home and land, those with a real interest in organic farming and small-scale winemaking may have opportunities to observe and learn about our way of cultivating grapes and making wine — depending on the season and our schedule.

We occasionally collaborate with universities for structured internships (separate from Workaway), but this is a different path and has different requirements. If this is something that interests you in the long term, I’ll be happy to talk more — just ask for my email.

If you are planning to travel around during your time off you should consider to hire a car as we are in a rural area and public transportation is usually not a convenient option.
I’ll be happy to take you with me anytime I will need to go to town or to show you around when I’m not too tired from farming.

You will be living in the house with us (my mom loves to hang around a lot and only speaks Italian) eating what we cook so if you are interested in traditional, simple, earthy farmers food you might like to experience it on a daily basis.
You would be involved in my life, meet my friends, occasionally come with me and see places around.
You can have your privacy if you prefer and stick to your separate apartment after work to be totally on yourself.
I’ve always spoken english at home so you will not have to deal with only italian speaking hosts but can definitely practice your Italian with me, my friends and especially my 89 year old mother if this is the purpose of your visit.
The place is very peaceful and beautiful and there is a possibility to take beautiful hikes all around.
Most of all you will be able to learn about grape growing and wine making in a completely organic and natural way from someone who take it extremely passionately and seriously.

  • Help

    Help

While I spend most of my time working in the vineyard and winery and taking care of everything else from bureaucracy to sales, I really have no time for the house and garden: I’ll really need help tending to the vegetable patch, weeding, watering, helping with the flowers, simple maintenance, cooking, cleaning and taking care of the outdoor spaces. Depending on the time of year, we might also be preparing the space for visits or tastings — keeping everything clean, welcoming, and well-organized.

You’ll be living in close contact with nature and participating in the daily rhythms of country life. Sometimes the tasks can be physical or repetitive, but we always try to keep the atmosphere joyful and collaborative.

    Accommodation

There’s a small independent apartment that sleeps max. three with its own bathroom that can be occasionally shared with other helpers. We will have meals together and if you like to learn to prepare some Italian dishes or share your favorite recipes you are welcome to help in the kitchen. We are not vegetarian but consumption of meat tends to be very limited.
There is internet access via WIFI if you have a laptop or other WIFI device.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We are 1 1/2 hours from Rome and Florence, as well as a short trip to Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto and a lot of other beautiful places in Umbria. We try to show our helpers as much as we can, for other trips we can take you to the local train station (Todi Ponte Rio)
Having your own car is recommended if you want to be more independent as public transportation is a very limited option around here.
We are located in the Tiber Natural Park and there are many beautiful trails that you can walk in beautiful natural and panoramic setting. There often are local events (mostly food related with tastings of local yummy stuff) in many of the surrounding villages tough everything is done in a smaller, quieter pleasant style.
