    Description

I live on a 96 acre property just outside of Hobart, in Fern Tree. The majority of the property is under a conservation covenant, ensuring it remains permanently preserved in its natural state. I am passionate about the environment and sharing nature with people. It's just me, no partner or family, so the property is always pretty quiet, other than the birds. On the property there are also 3 visitor cabins which I rent out for short-term stays. Fern Tree is an amazing place because it's only 15 minutes from Hobart but feels a world away. It's surrounded by kunanyi / Mt Wellington park and many other large bush blocks. There are lots of hiking trails all starting within walking distance of my place. There is a bus stop 1km up the road, and a local pub that's a Hobart favourite.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

I have been a Workaway myself for a short time in Australia a number of years ago. I really valued the experience of sharing everyday life with my hosts and learning from a different way of living. That experience was part of my ongoing interest in travel, people, and different cultures, and it’s something I’d love to continue both giving and receiving through hosting.

As a host, I want Workaways to feel genuinely welcome in my home and on my property. I enjoy sharing meals, conversation, and day-to-day life, and I see the cultural exchange as just as important as the help itself.

Depending on the season and projects at the property, I can offer insight into sustainable living, hands-on property development, gardening, and life in a bushland setting near Hobart and kunanyi / Mt Wellington. I’m also very open to learning from Workaways: new skills, language, different approaches to life, cooking, or simply fresh perspectives.

My aim is to create a relaxed and respectful exchange where both sides benefit: Workaways contribute to meaningful projects while experiencing everyday life in Tasmania, and I gain from the energy, ideas, and cultural backgrounds they bring.

  • Help

    Help

Help on my property is focused on gardening and caring for the land around the house and surrounding bushland. This includes walking track maintenance, weeding, digging, planting, and mulching, along with small landscaping tasks as they come up. I’m also starting work on a pond near the house for local wildlife.

There are three small visitor accommodation cabins on the property that are rented to members of the public. These are set apart from the main house and are only used by paying guests. Workaways won’t be involved in any work related to these cabins or guests, with all help centred on my home, garden, and the land itself.

You'll have the spare bedroom in my place which has it's own private ensuite bathroom. King bed, wardrobe, and a huge window overlooking the mountain. You'll also have full use of my house with a generous kitchen, comfy lounge room, outdoor deck and laundry. I'll provide all the food, but would love to share the cooking if you're up for it.

    What else ...

Generally I am looking for shorter stays - say 2-3 weeks. But open to discussion.
I am happy to help out with transport from time to time. There is also a bus stop 1km from my place that can get you to and from Hobart. The airport is only 30 minutes away.
