Description
Me: I’m a semi-retired educator switching gears in life - the goal is to live a simpler, more sustainable life. Hence, the homestead idea.
A few months ago I purchased a 2.5 acre lot with a 3 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom home just one minute outside of Bancroft, Ontario. The land has space for chickens, a few pigs and goats, terraced gardens, a place for a cabin, yurt, or earthship, as well as a small maple syrup operation. The home is located on the south face of a hill!
The kind of help a prospective workawayer would help me with: include forest management, gardening, maple syrup taping, some simple carpentry and masonry. Five hours a day would be pretty reasonable with the rest being free time! The town of Bancroft is a one minute drive away from my house, 4 minute bike ride, or 20 minute walk.
Bancroft is an old mining/forestry town. There is a wonderful free heritage museum, as well as a beautiful hike overlooking the town and valley called Eagle’s Nest. This is not to mention the countless rivers and lakes we could explore. I have a canoe and fishing rod! -

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Cultural exchange:
This would be a major part of your stay here! I love discussing language, culture, and farming. I identify as Christian but am very nondogmatic about my faith and love discussing spirituality with a variety of people. That said, I draw the line at more extreme views like veganism, satanism, and wokism (just to be upfront about that!).
I personally don’t like sharing the number of countries I have travelled to but I will share that I have seen a good chunk of the world and have worked in about seven different countries as a teacher. I’ve seen quite a bit!
I can get by in five languages although my Spanish and French are a bit rusty. As a language teacher I can teach you much about the English language. -
Help
Gardening, landscaping, setting up structures for animals. I've been busy clearing trees from the land this summer. I want to get a chicken coop up and structures for both pigs and goats one day. Also prepare for bees next year :).
