Johanna and me (KAT) are living in the northern part of Sweden since 2007. We have seen many different places in the North and worked ourselves as helpers on different farms.
This is our homestead since 2011. Here we are running a competitive sled dog kennel with around 30 dogs. Some of them are retired sled dogs, enjoying their live on the couch inside and the other ones are crazy super athletes who enjoy running 1000 km in a week.
The sled dogs are the heart and soul at this place.
Our long-term goal is to live as self-sufficient as possible, quite challenging at the Arctic Circle, but we love challenges. We started a permaculture garden where we are growing vegetables like salad, tomatoes, pumpkins and much more (we take a break with the vegetables in summer 2019 due to many building projects).
We pick a lot of berries in summer and autumn to make jam, dry fruits and vegetables, smoke meat and take fish from the lake. We love backing our bread, mainly with spelt flour, only thing missing is a clay oven outside. For sure one of the future projects.
We like to skype or video call via Whats app with every interested helper - so enough room to ask all your questions.
Looking forward to meet you.
Typical Swedish house. Downstairs is the kitchen, combined living/dining room, bathroom and office. Upstairs is the helper’s area with 3 bedrooms, one of the bedrooms is also our sewing room. Often shared bedroom, if you stay longer, we try to provide you with your own room.
NOTE: We don’t have a toilet inside, but we have a simple and well working outdoor toilet. We shower in the sauna – typical Finnish style. You will love it!
High quality is more important for us than a high variation. That means we are buying a lot of biodynamical food and try to cook a lot of seasonal dishes. You will not find fresh exotic fruits here, ok – sometimes we buy bananas… But I think you get the point.
We eat lunch and dinner together, great if you also like to share some of your favorite dishes with us!
Projects during the year:
- Fishing – laying out nets and taking care of the fish (may – oct)
- Helping with daily tasks in the kennel – a lot of scooping the poop 😊, walking the retired dogs, feeding, giving massages, shoveling snow in winter (all year around)
- Helping with building, repairing, painting – due to your interests and skills (april – oct)
- Picking berries (aug-sept)
- Gardening – moving the lawn, weeding, harvesting (may – sept)
- Making firewood – splitting and stacking (April-may)
- and cooking of course
Cooking / shopping
Help in the house
We will teach you everything we know about the daily life at the Arctic Circle, every season is different and you have to listen to Mother Nature :-)
We like to have 2-4 helpers at our farm for a longer period in winter (sept-may). You can learn a lot about dog care and training.
The projects are very different from season to season, but you should love to help outside even when the sun is not shining :-) It often does shine but not always.
You don´t need to be super strong but you should like to work hard.
If you are open hearted, motivated and interested in our lifestyle we will have a great time together with the dogs.
Some projects during the year:
Animal Care, Cleaning, Construction projects, Cooking, Farm Tasks, general, Firewood splitting & gathering, Gardening tasks, general, Trail Maintenance, Weeding, snow showeling, walking the older dogs.
