We are James, Carol and Monty. We bought our land in 2012, and have been working on building ourselves a life there ever since. Until summer 2015, we were based in Todmorden, in the Pennines, going to the land in school holidays to plant trees and hedges (in winter) and build outbuildings (in summer). Having been awarded planning permission for our self-designed straw bale house, we moved here in 2015 to “be the change we want to see”.

Help with Eco project
We are building a timber framed straw bale house. Over the course of our project we will need help with carpentry (frame and roof), roofing (putting on tiles), putting in windows and doors, straw baling the walls and plastering the walls. We also need help developing our permaculture garden, cooking and helping out with our two year old. The nature of the work is quite physically demanding. Tasks are weather dependent and may involve working as part of a group or by yourself.
Camping in our field - you will need to bring your own tent etc. Facilities are limited but we have all the bathroom essentials (including solar hot water & compost loo). Simple vegetarian meals are provided but volunteers are expected to help with cooking / washing up.
We work hard and tend to have a task we want to achieve each day. As such we welcome volunteers keen to get involved, pitch in as necessary and committed to helping us progress with our project. We are in quite a rural setting and volunteers must be able to occupy themselves in their free time - the area is great for cycling and walking. Our nearest station is Fromental Gare or La Souterraine. We speak English and French. We are keen to share the skills we are learning and also look forward to learning from volunteers.
Please note: Due to our field being unfenced we are unable to accept dogs on our site, apologies.
