We have dedicated our lives to saving / helping Australian wildlife. Our home is full of Australian animals - mainly kangaroos and birds with the occasional wombat, echidna, lizard or emus. All the animals have been rescued and either have injuries or are babies whose mothers have been killed.
We also have a large Aboriginal art gallery (with art, didgeridoos and artefacts) / opal shop / display underground opal mine and museum as well as the Kangaroo Orphanage in the main street of Coober Pedy, the OPAL capital of the world. Free didgeridoo lessons.
You need to have a good sense of humour and be prepared to live with baby kangaroos jumping around the house!
This is an unique opportunity to live in one of the most interesting towns in the world, learn about opal (Australia's national gemstone), learn about Aboriginal art and heritage plus learn for free to play the didgeridoo. Share a home with 2 true Australian characters.
We will also take you on a 'tour' of some interesting places in the region.
We are currently looking for someone to stay with us for a week or two. Someone who has an eye for detail, can clean in either the home or gallery.
We are always looking for help with a variety of work - odd jobs, cleaning the yard, some light construction work, fencing, gardening, painting, helping out in the gallery, household jobs and/or general housekeeping. Being able to operate power tools, do some concreting or tiling and work without supervision will be considered a big asset. There is always something that needs doing around the place.
Your working hours vary according to the weather, averaging approximately 5 hours per day with plenty of time off to explore Coober Pedy.
Unfortunately we are not multi lingual only being able to converse in English, Australian and kangaroo. Therefore you need to have good English as well as good comprehension of English as you will need to understand and follow instructions clearly.
You will share our home, including all meals . Sorry - NO VEGETARIANS. I repeat - NO VEGETARIANS!!!!!! Your sleeping quarters will be an air-conditioned caravan which is basic but private with a queen size bed.
Please - look at a map before applying. We are nowhere near Adelaide. We are located halfway between Adelaide and Alice Springs on the main highway (Stuart Highway).
Public transport to Coober Pedy is by Greyhound bus from either Alice Springs or Adelaide.
Coober Pedy has an airport. Flights are available from Adelaide only (Rex Airlines - expensive).
Plenty of time off to explore Coober Pedy and search for your own opals. We will also arrange/take you on tour of the surrounding areas of Coober Pedy.
We are located half way between Adelaide (Adelaide is nearly 900 kms south of Coober Pedy) and Alice Springs (which is 700 kms north of Coober Pedy) on the Stuart Highway (the main highway). The Greyhound Bus travels through Coober Pedy daily from both Alice Springs and Adelaide. Rex Airline is the only airline that flies into Coober Pedy and only from Adelaide.
