Cultural Exchange and Lifelong Friendships in Cambodia

Working and interacting with Cambodians and international volunteers provides an incredible opportunity to build personal relationships and learn about diverse cultures.

Living and volunteering in a new country offers a rich experience that fosters cultural exchange. Adapting to and understanding a new environment enhances your flexibility—an invaluable skill throughout your volunteer journey and beyond.

You’ll forge new friendships and learn effective ways to communicate with people from various backgrounds. One of the greatest benefits of cultural exchange programs is the chance to create lifelong connections, both within the project and while exploring Southeast Asia. Whether collaborating on tasks or meeting fellow travelers, you’ll find that these volunteer experiences lead to lasting friendships.

    Accommodation

Accommodation for Volunteers in Bakong District

Our volunteer accommodation and schools are located in Bakong District, just a 30-minute tuk-tuk ride from the vibrant tourist hub of Siem Reap.

    Living Arrangements:

In our English school, we offer a spacious house for volunteers. The shared open area features curtains around each bed for added privacy, accommodating up to 12 volunteers. The house includes two bathrooms with a western toilet and heated shower, but the water pressure is not the best, so volunteers always prefer to use the bucket shower. We provide mosquito nets, electric fans, and pillows, but you may want to bring a light sleeping bag, bed sheet, or blanket. Electricity is available for charging your devices.

    Connectivity:

Enjoy full Wi-Fi access, though it may occasionally be interrupted due to power outages. You'll need a local SIM card if you plan to use data outside of Cristina School.

    Unique Community Experience:

Our house is rented through project contributions, allowing you to immerse yourself in village life alongside local families. You'll share the grounds with children, four cats, several hens, and a playful puppy.

    Meals:

We source fresh food from the local market daily. Our wonderful Cambodian cook, Sok Nim (Rathana’s aunt), prepares three warm meals lunch and dinner. Breakfast features international options like baguette and coffee/tea, while lunch and dinner can be tailored to your dietary preferences but mainly will be rice or noddle, vegetables, meat and egg. Drinking water is available throughout the day.

    Transportation:

We provide transportation to and from the schools/projects, as well as bikes for your use. Please note that tourist activities are not included in your contribution, as Rathana and the local family are fully dedicated to the project and cannot cover volunteer expenses.

    Build Lasting Connections:

Living in the volunteer house offers an authentic Cambodian experience and the chance to forge lifelong friendships!

Note: Smoking is allowed outside the school gates, but please use ashtrays to dispose of butts responsibly.

    Weekend Adventures for Volunteers

On weekends, volunteers often head to Siem Reap town to enjoy a hot shower, swim in a pool, and explore local attractions. You can also visit iconic sights like Angkor Wat or take a weekend trip to Battambang (just 3 hours by bus). Don’t miss the nearby Bakong Temples, which are definitely worth a visit!

Important Note: If you plan to engage in these activities, please remember that our team members are not tour guides. They’re happy to drive you, but kindly ask them in advance, and be prepared to cover the cost of gasoline and meals.

We also organize trips with the local children on weekends, renting a minivan for some fun together!

When not teaching or planning lessons, you can relax in hammocks, chat, play cards, listen to music, or enjoy a cold drink.

We hope to see you soon!

This host has been visited by a member of the Workaway team

"I had a chance to visit a local school in Cambodia. It is located at a rural village near Siem Reap. It took around 30-40 minutes to reach there.

There are 8 workawayers currently volunteering there and all of them seemed enjoying so much from teaching and having fun with the kids. They sing and dance together. I’m really impressed the singing time in the playground before class everyday. All of us held hands together and formed a big circle. The kids seem to be thankful for the workawayers to teach and also be with them.

A post student from this school became the manager of the school. I can feel the change from her life and I’m so happy for her.

The workawayers all enjoy a lot from this stay and they are really impacting the kids’ lives. Their big smiles and laughters are all around the school.

It is a big honour for us to give out bags and stationery for them to make their school life more fruitful.

I’m so glad that I can grab this chance to make a visit to this school. " - Dionne from the Workaway team, October 2019
