Summer Camp help with community living, progressive behavior management styles, the craziest games you'll ever play, and children that will remember you forever...

Interested in working at a summer camp with community-centered values? With a small 1:5 counselor-to-camper ratio, earnestly held communication philosophies such as non-violent communication and consensus decision making, and a wealth of activities to explore, we hope that being at camp this summer would be an amazing option for any adventurer. We provide a significant amount of training in child development, activities such as high ropes, blacksmithing, horseback riding, and jewelry smithing, and place an emphasis on supporting all of our staff throughout the summer.

Our purpose is to provide children with a healthy environment for growth and exploration, to allow them to explore their interests and skills, and to give them the time and space to reflect upon who they are as a member of a community. Living in wooden cabins without electricity, campers are encouraged to create their own stories and make their own music.

Essentially, we are looking for excellent team members who can commit to a summer-long paid position, and think that those who are interested in Workaway will be incredible candidates for many of our roles, including Counselor, Program Coordinator, and Equestrian Manager.

    DATES AND BENEFITS
Housing, utilities, and meals are provided for the entire summer season. All meals are healthy and organic, with a wide range of alternative diet choices being accommodated. This is a paid position, with a single salaried amount for the summer season.

All staff must be available for our main season dates, which run from May 13th to August 11th, 2024. Our staff training is 3.5 weeks long, which allows us to teach our staff an incredible amount of child psychology, activity facilitation, and community building opportunities are available to stay for additional work and pay during the post-season assisting with family camps and school groups before staff training (start of May) and after the summer (August and September).

    REQUIRED BITS
Must be at least 19 years old by May 2024 (3 years older than our oldest campers)
Must be available for our full summer (May 13 - Aug 11)
Previous and meaningful work in childcare or outdoor education
Life experience! We hope to have a diverse range of people who can share their perspectives
Ability and willingness to work at a sustained, high-energy pace for extended time (seriously, how's your energy level?)

Hope to hear from you soon!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

As a community of 60+ staff members we have a strong community dedicated to child development, play, and personal growth. Staff will have an opportunity to be a part of a unique American summer camp organization, explore the local area, including Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe National Forest, Nevada City, and Grouse Ridge.
As a member of our community, we hope that you will be able to bring your deep knowledge of the world, your unique perspective on human interaction, and the skills and hobbies that you have developed during your lifetime.
With 3.5 weeks of staff training on child psychology, group communication, and non-profit culture, we offer quite a bit of learning opportunities to everyone in our community, as well as providing them with opportunities to share their knowledge and skill with us.

  • Help

    Help

The type of help throughout the summer depends greatly upon role of the person in the community. For any role the days are just packed.
Counselors during the summer will be in a cabin with five campers each week, facilitate activities throughout the day, play in camp-wide games in the evening, eat community meals during the day, and find other ways to improve camp operations. When campers are not on site we focus on program development, MOOP, and activity preparation.
