Description
Do you want to experience a few days of quiet, everyday rural life in New Zealand from a unique spot in Northland?
If you love falling asleep to the sound of the morepork (ruru) and waking up to water views, you will feel right at home here.
In exchange for just 2–2.5 hours of help a day, you get a comfortable, independent stay. We are happy to join you on the Dukes Nose hike, a snorkel day, or just have a coffee in the morning / watch a movie in the evening. You can block the hours so you have a full day to explore.
This is a home, not a farm or a company, so you will have quite a bit of time for yourself. Knowing how to entertain yourself without town entertainment is a must :)
Some activities nearby:
* Hike Dukes Nose
* Go for a shorter walk around the bay
* Take the kayak out for a paddle
* Drive out to one of the many beautiful beaches
(knowing you have a warm bed and shower to get back to!)
Where you sleep:
* Spacious bedroom with your own TV
* Private use of the main bathroom
(Please note: meals are not provided.)
Work examples:
* Mowing
* Spraying
* Staining
* Window cleaning
We’re a Dutch/Kiwi couple in our mid-30s and late 40s, and this is a true Kiwi rural lifestyle home, so we are not suitable for vegetarians. My partner is working on a project, and you might not meet him during your stay.
I (Irene) arrived in New Zealand as a backpacker in 2019 and met Bill a few weeks later. I immediately embraced a very rural and outdoor lifestyle (especially as we were living in a caravan while building this house!). We recently moved back from Australia and are finally “living” in the house, which is great.
I would like to welcome travellers from time to time and share our experiences. However, I also respect your privacy and need my own: I am currently in the middle of a career switch and studying remotely. So while I am often around, I am not always “free.”
This is a relaxed, mature environment best suited to someone 25+ who is genuinely interested and self-motivated to help out, and equally happy to sit back and relax, and is social when the time suits.
The essentials:
- Transport: You must have your own vehicle due to the remote location.
- Cats: You must be a cat lover (we have two!). No other pets.
- We cannot host vegans/vegetarians.
- Stay: Short-term stays only (max. 1 week).
The closest towns are Kaeo (15 min), Mangōnui (25 min), Kerikeri (45 min), Kaitaia (55 min), and Paihia (60 min). We suggest doing groceries in Kerikeri before arriving. -

Space for parking camper vans
There is plenty of space to park vans, though access is via a steep, windy gravel road. It is definitely doable, and we’re happy to help if needed. Alternatively, you can leave your van at the bottom and walk up, or we can pick you up.
