    Description

We have an olive farm in Maldonado Department of Uruguay. We have 3 large dogs, some chickens, and 3 sheep. We also have a greenhouse in disrepair, but with a nice new polycarbonate roof, and we want to get it up-and-running again. We live here and have jobs, too. One of us runs a little country store, another is a construction worker, and is retired, but does some remote teaching. The area is beautiful, and people from neighboring Argentina spend quite a bit to vacation here in summer, granted, mostly at the beaches at Punta del Este, but some also seek out the tranquility of the countryside.

The olive oil we produce is for our own consumption, and not generally for sale, but we intend to change this at some point, even though with the 5 hectares or so that are planted this would not be profitable business-wise. Anyone living here and participating in the harvest can consume the oil too (within reason).

With all the chaos and turbulence in the world, Uruguay is like a safe refuge from it all.

We are in great need of helpers for the upcoming harvest, which commences in a few short weeks.

The site is a beautiful hilly region of Uruguay, and although our site is 22 kms. away from the nearest town, the bus stops at our door. Access to Piriápolis and Punta del Este is easy. Most people in this area only speak Spanish, although there are many Europeans that have come here recently to purchase farms and retreats. There is a significant presence of traditional "gaucho" culture in the area. We have a small store that is often frequented by people arriving on horseback. In our household we speak mostly Spanish, and any person living with us will benefit from the Spanish-language practice.

Also, we cure our own green and black olives (Sicilian style), as well as make some of our own wine (already done this time of year). We will involve you in the olive harvest process, and you will learn how to cure and preserve olives, both black and green.

    Accommodation

Bedroom-like space and bathroom in a shipping container (can be a private space for two people, or in the case of a single person, he can share with one other person - we will provide an extra bed). We also have a bedroom inside the house that is currently used for seed storage, but if need be, can be restored to its original purpose.

We all cook and provide omnivorous meals. We make homemade pasta, dumplings, corn (nixtamalized) and flour tortillas - Mexican food is not common in Uruguay, but we love to make and eat multi-ethnic meals.

Good telecommunications available here. Cell towers are about a km. away. The internet bandwidth is generally busiest from 6am to 12pm, but digital nomads can easily get LTE cell plans (very reasonable) with excellent coverage.
