Description
*4 April hosting update:
There is no availability through to 16 May. From 16 May through the remainder of 2026, my hosting status is uncertain at this stage, however feel free to message me to enquire about possibilities for this period, even if you see them in red status. It’s sometimes the case I make a decision to host at short notice.
Please note that my strong preference currently is for hosting a single Workaway guest at a time. Physical strength, flexibility, passion, adaptability, and pro-activeness are highly desired character traits.
Keep safe and great travels till maybe we meet in the near future! *
Hey I’m Sam! A former university lecturer, arts lover, and enthusiastic home cook and gardener, I live in the north shore of Auckland, in the relaxing beachside suburb of Hauraki, close to shops, cafes, restaurants, the bays, cycle and walking trails, and within easy access to the motorway system and the CBD. Beautiful Takapuna, Narrow Neck, and Milford Beaches are in close range. My home borders the Northboro Reserve, and is in a very quiet residential street.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
A sixth generation New Zealander, born and raised in Switzerland eight years, I love meeting people from all cultures and nations. Evening discussions about politics, the arts and culture I very much enjoy, as well as leaning new skills, be they cooking, technical, or practical. As a poet and writer, I can offer opportunities to learn the craft, and while working, tips on gardening, and my knowledge of antiques and collectables. My history of hiking and travelling in New Zealand and overseas may help you in planning further travels around the country!

Help
Help gardening, including weeding, pruning, trimming, planting, composting, water blasting of paths, house cleaning, lawn mowing, and brass silver copper polishing, is needed.

Accommodation
There are two guest rooms available, sharing a modern bathroom. The bigger room has a queen bed and private library for the guests, the other a king single bed. Both enjoy the exclusive use of the entire south wing. In addition, a cosy living room and large sitting room are available to relax in, as well as ample outdoor garden areas to relax in, read a book, take a nap, or enjoy a drink!

What else ...
Plenty of activities to engage in locally for entertainment, leisure, fitness, and relaxation. A substantial range of retail shops, cafes, and restaurants in easy driving or walking range.
Excellent beach walks including Takapuna, Milford, Narrow Neck and Cheltenham, as well as nature reserves.
Very close to bus stations, and my home borders the Takapuna to Milford cycle and walking trail!
Ferries a short drive away or longer walk departing from Devonport and Bayswater to the CBD and other destinations.
Much to explore across the city, from art galleries and museums to markets, clubs, bars, day walks, west Auckland beaches and forests, boutique shops, and cultural and sporting events aplenty.
Sorry no smoking, vaping or recreational drugs. Everything else very relaxed.
During days it’s loosely anticipated breakfast at 8:00am, help 9-12. Lunch 12:45. help 2-4. Dinner at 6:00pm. This is very flexible to accommodate Work Awayer preferences and planned free time activities.
Volunteers are welcome to assist with meal preparation, and to cook dishes of their choosing. At weekends guests may need to cook their meals, but food provisions will be available to cook from.
