Come and help us build a skatepark for the youth of Bhaktapur, Nepal. We are looking for a volunteer with experience in construction of skate parks to join a team of 3, from the UK, Switzerland and Bhaktapur itself as we build the park in early 2018.
You will be based in Bhaktapur, 'the city of worshippers'. A designated Unesco World Heritage Site, the city is bursting with traditional Newari red brick archtecture, beautiful wood carvings and temples on every corner. You will likely celebrate a number of Nepal's annual festivals during your time here, and enjoy the colour and sounds of daily street life in Bhaktapur. Working in a developing country is certainly a learning curve for all of us but we hope it will be an enjoyable experience, from which you will learn valuable lessons about working in this unique environment.
We are looking for someone who knows a bit about building skateparks. You'll need to advise on construction methods and ensure the work is carried out properly by local masons and labourers (don't worry about speaking Nepali! We'll have interpreters to help you!) You'll also need vision, determination and patience; things don't always go quite as you expect here in Nepal and you will need to solve problems and think on your feet!
Accommodation will be free of charge. You will have a single bed in a mixed, 5-bed dormitory in a guest house in the centre of Bhaktapur city, with a wonderful Nepali family. Some of the team stay in the same guesthouse. All meals will be provided; lunch and dinner will be at the guest house and on work days lunch will be provided at the site. Breakfast and dinner will vary and you will have some choice, lunch at the site will be traditional Nepali 'dal bhat'; lentil soup, white rice and seasonal vegetable curry.
Bhaktapur is a wonderful city to get lost in, with plenty of interesting places within day trip distance. From Nagarkot you can take a sunrise hike for a great view of the Himalayas and we'd be happy to help you arrange treks or other travel in Nepal when the project is completed! We're just 15km from Kathmandu, Nepal's unique and bustling capital city.
