Hello I am Pablo. I am a multi-media assemblage and installation artist, who had been living and working in Berlin, Paris and New York for almost 23 years. During a portion of that period of time I acquired a quaint farm in rural NE Germany where we hosted many Workawayers for several seasons.
I have since relocated the project to beautiful Cibola County in west-central New Mexico. The space is located approximately 45 minutes west of Albuquerque and about 1.5 hours southwest of Santa Fe. In order to prepare the space for our artist-in- residency program, we are concentrating our Workaway projects on renovating some of the adobe outbuildings to artist live / work spaces. These adobe buildings were formerly part of an old Route 66 motel. We also have a small orchard with a laborious irrigation system which needs maintaining as well.
In addition to the renovation projects we will also be concentrating on the construction of several new buildings on the property. These buildings will be built as off-grid structures and made of repurposed materials, such as aluminium cans, bottles and other discarded products. The structures will serve as restroom facilities with composting toilets, solar heated shower room and outdoor communal kitchens. We also have a wide range of gardening and landscape projects to work on. One of the landscaping projects is to lay the groundwork for our upcoming sculpture garden. This portion of the project also includes the construction of a 300 foot "art wall" which will function as a drive-by gallery on our frontage to the legendary Route 66. The wall will contain 60 sections of 8ft x 8ft sections for a total of 3840 SqFt of art displaying surface.
Our facility is located directly on the historical Old Route 66 in San Fidel, New Mexico. A portion of our project has been listed on the National Registry of Historical places. The Acoma Curio Shop, which is where we host artist workshops and exhibitions, has been listed as a national historic place and can be found on the National Parks Services website. San Fidel can also be found on the national registry of New Mexico ghost towns...
The area surrounding San Fidel is rich with natural beauty and Native American culture. The Spanish land grant of San Fidel is surrounded by several reservations including the Pueblos of the Laguna, Acoma and Zuni tribes. In addition to the fascinating Pueblos, the area is also home for many national forests and monuments. These surroundings will ensure that you are able to discover many facets of New Mexico during your stay with us.
All volunteers will be integrated into our daily life and be offered the opportunity to participate in and help coordinate all our local, cultural and civic projects. In addition to volunteers from Workaway, the space is also home to various artists who are participating in any one of our artist residency or artist workshop programs. We also welcome travelers as guests through an online rental platform. This combination of diverse visitors enables each of our guests the chance to make new friends along the way on life's exciting journey.
I spent a number of years living and travelling around Europe & Central America, as well as being a Workaway host for several years. Therefore, I understand and share the excitement of your decision to embark on such an endeavor as this Workaway project. We look forward to welcoming you to our project and as part of our ever increasing international family.
Our first priority in selecting volunteers will be the skill sets offered by the volunteers with respect to accomplishing any of the above mentioned projects. Please be sure to detail your skills along with which projects you feel most qualified to assist us with. Thanks!
