  • Description

Our casa was the historic home of Colombian sculptor Jorge Marín Vieco, my husband's father. It's a big, beautiful, historic mansion begun in the 1930's, and continually being expanded little by little. It's surrounded by sculpture gardens, flowers and fruit trees, an oasis of nature that makes you forget you're in a city of 3 million people.

Important musicians, writers and other artists have left their mark here, and one of Colombia's most famous folk songs was written about it. My husband, Jorge, and I, Jenine, live here, where we have a piano gallery, an art museum for Marín Vieco's works, and a small guesthouse of sorts because we rent out so many rooms online. As you can imagine, it's a lot of work!

We would greatly appreciate your help, and hope that we can be of help to you as well during your stay in Medellín.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

You will be in an artistic, cultural Colombian environment where you can relax and be inspired. We have lots of pianos. (Just ask first before playing them, please!) You can certainly learn Spanish. My husband and I are bilingual and bicultural (Colombia-USA).

My mother-in-law, Maruja, and some long-term renters who live right next door, within the complex, and very Colombian, and our online rental guests are fascinating people from all over the world. Our place has a fresh, bright, calming energy that, as the name so aptly indicates, makes people want to stay.

This is a very big, charming old mansion, and it needs a lot of repairs and improvements. There are big and small projects going on all the time, so experience in plumbing, construction and gardening is a plus, though not required. We might need you to paint pianos, dig holes, plant bushes, fix roofs, bathe the dogs... not sure what will come up! :) Then there are the every day things we could use your help with, such as taking care of the garden, cooking for the workers, cleaning, etc. We'll do our best to show you around and help you feel comfortable, and if you're not sure of how to do something just let us know.

We have several wonderful full-time staff that you'll probably be working with for the most part (they only speak Spanish). There will always be people coming in and out, and many international guests. (We rent out four rooms and two apartments.)

The work will vary according to what needs to be done, but will most likely be in the morning. Work days in Colombia start early (sometimes 6 am!) so... hope you like the sunrise. If you don't mind putting in extra hours in order to get more days off, that's fine, too. There are plenty of amazing places to go around Medellín.

You'll most likely have your own room, though you may need to share with another workawayer. We would let you know first, though. We'll lend you towels, sheets and blankets. There are several lovely common areas you can have access too, and of course the spacious gardens, full of flowers, mango trees, birds, and sometimes a monkey or two.

The "Big Room" has a chimney and a ping-pong table, and sometimes we hold events there, but we'd let you know ahead of time.

Breakfast and lunch during the week is with us, but in the evening and on weekends meals will also be up to you. We will provide the basics and whatever leftovers there are from the week, and for anything else you may want, the Exito de Robledo is a 5 minute drive or bus ride away, and there are several small "tiendas" in the neighborhood.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We are vegetarians, and almost vegan. However, if you feel you need meat, you can fix it in the kitchenette for your other meals.

No smoking please, not even in the gardens.

We are five minutes walk from a large road where you can get buses to Floresta Metro station (10 minutes), downtown (30 minutes) or Estadio/Laureles (15 minutes). We are not close to Poblado (a taxi there costs around $15,000-20,000 COP). However, we are on a mountain with a great bike road a ways behind our house.
