    Description

We are a family of two 35-y-olds and one 15-y-old. In the past years we have been traveling a lot, and now are settling in to Helsinki. We enjoy creative hobbies (there is abundance of art and craft and sewing materials at our home that we are happy to share), board games, cooking and hiking. We are neurospicy and queer.

If you want to know why the Finnish people/things/cities do things like that, we often know. We had the same questions and looked it up :)

We are happy to provide you your own space, and our social batteries are limited. But you will neither feel lonely here, we are happy to , and appreciate things like shared meals, boardgames or movie nights, or evening of getting together to chat and do repairs or other busywork with hands. We can also teach you these things.

In general we are great at creative problem solving, so wether it is about getting to Berlin on a shoestring budget, saving what there is to save of your only shoes, or how to choose a career that does not kill your soul, you will have our outside-the-box expertise.

    Help

We have recently moved together in Helsinki. As everything is new, our teenager would profit from support - someone providing structured activities while we parents get other things done. Kid speaks German and Finnish as mother tong, and fluent English.

Support would mean help with the homework. Especially staying on task, understanding complex concepts (such as "evolution" or "middle class"), and learning Swedish, witch is a new language for Kiddo. Learning how to learn is also important, and building routines around school work. You having the ability to keep up structures and expect accountability would be great, tutoring is great too but checking from wikipedia will usually be enough to make sure Kiddo is learning the things correctly.

To balance out work we would appreciate you playing games with the child, ideally do sports (football, gym, but open for anything), creative hobbies... and anything you enjoy and would like to introduce. Kiddo likes screen time too much, so we are looking for something else to do. Kiddo is pro-social and open, and has a lot of experience with international circles.

Beside that there is some light housework. We do have robot vacuum cleaner and dishwasher and try to run a household that is easy and intuitive to maintain. There is also repair work as and option. We prefer to share house work based on interest and enjoyment: if you dislike bringing the trash out but find filling up the dishwasher meditative, we are happy to share with that in mind.

This host offers a language exchange
Different languages enable different ways of thinking, communicating and understanding the world. We love word plays and puns, and play with languages a lot. You can learn Finnish and German with us (we can easily switch our home to these languages), we would like to learn Spanish (one day). We do especially appreciate German speakers, as this helps Kiddo stay fluent.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will have your own room with a bed and desk and space for your things. There is high speed internet. Please ask us if you notice you need something - if we got it, we'll add it to your room ASAP :)

The apartment is located ten minutes from the metro stop "Mellunmäki", and about 20min with the metro to Helsinki center. It is in third floor, quiet and calm neighbourhood.

We have done pet sitting in exchange of accommodation, and have learned a lot about what it is to come to strangers houses and travel this way, which we translate to being better hosts.
