    Description

We are a small lifestyle block located east of Carterton in the Wairarapa. This farm was started from bare blocks about 8 years ago and we have been putting in all the infrastructure ourselves. Jeremy and I are American ex-pats in our 40's with lots and lots of animals :)

We feed our cows, sheep, geese, chickens, cats, dogs, and pigs every day so there is a bit of animal time. We also do a lot of things like planting landscaping trees and plants and tending the veggie patch. We have lots of small projects to improve the place and often need a hand. Some stuff is outdoors, other stuff can be indoors. We plan with you to make sure you are happy.

I make my own soap, syrups, jams, jellies, sausages, cider, cheese, etc depending on the time of year. We also try to eat what we grow ourselves and raise our own meat and poultry. These activities are seasonal but always glad to have a hand!

Currently we would prefer pairs of Workawayers just so you have company and help during the day for projects and for singles we will try to book another person for the same time so you have company. There is a self-contained granny flat with bathroom and full living/dining/bedroom loft where you can stay.

Currently we will need help with planting the veggie patch, doing pathways and making new garden beds, weeding the garden, making some new cow and sheep paddocks, getting the homestay further developed, and heaps of routine cleaning and maintenance. We are really flexible as some projects are day-long and we are more than happy to work a schedule that suits.

Days are flexible as Jeremy is full-time pig farming on our free range pig farm and me doing locum veterinary. There is a chance for those with aptitude to do some work on the pig farm in the warmer months.

We do prefer people to NOT be vegetarian when they stay with us. Our meat is from our own animals or free range and we are really big on welfare. We can accommodate vegetarians but it is an inconvenience to us to have to alter our cooking and eating so if you are vegetarian you are welcome to stay for up to a week as after that I run out of vegetarian recipes :). In general we also have found stays of 2 weeks to be the ideal for us to get to know you and get you familiar with the chores and farming we do but keep you travelling and happy.

We also have a small 2 person van that you can use on off days to travel to local places of interest/shopping etc.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We offer people a chance to learn about farming and off-grid season living. We also eat meat/dairy/eggs from our own animals and make a lot of things grown by ourselves. We can show people the skills for living more simply and sustainably.

    Help

There is lots to do either with animals or not. We are very flexible with the chores people want to take on. We tend to tailor the work to the number of people and the weather.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Right now we have one bedroom with your own bathroom and toilet in the house. We also have a fully equipped granny flat that should be ready for more of a self-contained stay with more room in the near future.

Please note we are off-grid so we don't watch very much TV or use a lot of electric appliances or we just tend to run things during daylight hours.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We are pretty much an hour from several coast fishing/diving spots but 15-20 mins from Martinborough, Carterton, Masterton so convenient to all of the Wairarapa. Plenty to see and do and we are a working farm with daily animal chores so plenty of animal contact.

Also we have two neighbours also registered with Workaway so if you are interested you can of course stay at our place and do different things with the neighbours (Highland cattle at one place and gypsy cob horses at the other) depending on your interests!
