    Description

We are a middle aged couple that run a horse farm in Iceland. We also have a few sheep as a hobby, for fun, and very friendly dogs.

We've had international helpers in our home (and living on our farm) since 1998, and the wife in the house was a worker herself as a volunteer and worker, several times, on farms, when younger. So we're pretty experienced in this, and simply try to make this a nice and meaningful experience for both those that stay here and host.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

You'll get to know the climate and culture, especially the culture of horse people, farmers and country side people in Iceland. And the nature here is stunning. Great hiking opurtunites if you like hiking. There's a swimming pool with hot tub and sauna a 10 min walk /5 min drive from the farm. You can lend a car for short excursions with some of the other staff. We can lend you a bike, and a tent/sleeping bag.
It's a super fun cultural exchange, getting to know Iceland in so many ways, and having fun with other young people, and us the locals.

We are looking for 1 person for as soon as possible in May - end of June,

for COOKING AND LIGHT HOUSEWORK :)

We are for this position NOT LOOKING FOR HELP WITH RIDING HORSES, but of course you can socialize a lot with our big group of horses, even learn a bit to ride if you're a beginner, and under 80 kg. Also, if you are an experienced riders it gives more options here, for riding, but we can discuss details regarding that if that is relevant and you're an experienced rider.
And we have 3 lovely smallish dogs that love people, and give great company.

    You need to:

-Be female, because of shared accommodation.
-Be a very experienced cook (but not on a chef level of course, no worries),loving to cook, and not scared of cooking dinner for 8-12 people. We're open minded regarding food.
-Manage in English or a Scandinavian language (so we can communicate :), you don't need to be fluent.
-Be sociable with an optimistic attitude towards life, so we all can have a good time together. This year we will be us two middle aged farmers, and ca. 6-8 people that are young (20-28 years old), so it's a fun team.
    -Like teamwork.
-Not have big diet preferences (f.ex. not vegeterian or pescaterian).
-Like to cook meat and other non-vegan food.
-Like housework and be experienced in them (light house chores involved).
-Have a driving licence (for a few minute drives because of the work).

-We can send you a lot more info in PM, about everything here, upon request. The farm is in a rural area in northern Iceland, by the ocean and breathtaking mountains, in a friendly neighbourhood. We have many Icelandic horses, and 3 medium sized friendly Icelandic sheepdogs.

    Chores:
Mostly, cooking dinner once a day 5 days per week (not breakfast or lunch, we can feed ourselves then). Light household chores.

Lots of more information provided upon request.

  • Languages

    Languages spoken
    Danish: Fluent
    English: Fluent

This host offers a language exchange
I am in totally a beginner level in French and German, and would love it if someone would help me practice, simply in a super simple conversation. If you'd like of course. Same with my husband and German, it would be great for him to practice German, he speaks a good bit of basic German, but is very rusty. I'm just talking about some chit chat fun, you don't have to worry about going into some deep teaching therre. And on the other hand, our home is very international, and you have a wonderful chance to practice English here. I'd love to helping you practice Danish if you like, and often there are other people in our staff that speak different languages (f.ex. German, French, Spanish, even more), it variates though, because we have seasonal staff.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Your accommodation will be, either a private camper (it can be a bit cold though) or shared a 9 sq m2 room in the farm house. You have Wifi in both campers and rooms. Good big indoor common room available (it's a tourist reception during the day) so we all can have a great time there together in the evening, watching films or playing board games or just having other fun.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We live in a very rural and beautiful area, with lots of space, northern lights (in September, if you're here then), and arctic beauty, we're pretty close to the ocean, and breathtaking mountains. It's remote but you meet and live with a lot of people, you won't be lonely. :) We have midnight sun (24/7 sunlight) in the summer months.
We are a lively group here, the people on the farm usually love playing card games/board games, hiking, and enjoying the wonderful Icelandic nature, and animals. And there is good company from other young people.
It's very rural in Iceland, there are usually at least a couple of kilometers between different farms, and 25 km to the next villages. So, there is a lot of peace and space. A hidden pearl to escape from the high energy modern cities in other countries.
