    About me and my place

Hi! My name is Barbara and I am a professional dog trainer with many years of experience working with dogs and studying canine communication and behaviour. I have also had the opportunity to travel and live abroad, which has given me a strong interest in different cultures, ways of life and meeting people from different parts of the world.

I live and work in Castelletto d’Orba, in Piedmont, northern Italy, where I run a dog training school, a day care service for dogs and a home-style boarding service.

My goal is to provide dogs with a safe, peaceful and stimulating environment where their physical and emotional needs are respected. I work with dogs on a daily basis and pay particular attention to communication, social interaction and the dynamics that develop when several dogs live and spend time together.

    The help we need

I am looking for someone who enjoys being around dogs and would like to learn about professional dog care and canine communication.

The help will mainly involve supporting me with the daily activities of the dog day care and home-style boarding service. Depending on experience and confidence with dogs, this can include:

    * helping with the daily care and supervision of the dogs
    * spending time with the dogs and observing their behaviour
    * helping during walks and outdoor activities
    * keeping the dogs’ areas clean and organised
    * helping with feeding and the general daily routine
    * assisting with the management of groups of dogs
    * helping with the practical tasks involved in running the day care and boarding service

The exact activities will depend on the person’s experience with dogs. I will always explain the routines and expectations clearly and will be available to teach and support the Workawayer.

    What you can learn

This is a particularly good opportunity for someone who is interested in dogs, animal behaviour or dog training.

I can teach many aspects of canine communication, including how dogs communicate with each other and with people, how to read their body language and how to safely manage groups of dogs.

I can also share my experience in managing a group, or “pack”, of dogs and explain how I approach different situations that can arise when dogs live and interact together.

You don’t need to be an experienced dog trainer. What is most important is that you genuinely like dogs, are responsible and are willing to learn.

    Cultural exchange

For me, Workaway is not simply about helping with the business. I would like it to be a genuine cultural exchange.

I have travelled and lived abroad myself, so I know how valuable it can be to experience another country through the daily life of someone who actually lives there.

When we are working, we can have meals together and talk about our experiences, cultures, food, travel and everyday life. I would be happy to share Italian food, traditions and the local way of life with my Workawayer.

In my free time, when possible, I also enjoy going on excursions and exploring the countryside, and I would be happy to share some of these experiences.

At the same time, I am very curious about other countries and cultures. I would love to hear about the Workawayer’s country, traditions, food, travels and way of life, and learn from their experiences.

I would like a Workawayer staying here to feel welcomed and included, rather than simply feeling like someone who has come to work.

    The area

Castelletto d’Orba is located in Piedmont, an area well known for its beautiful countryside, vineyards and excellent wines.

There are many opportunities for walking, hiking and enjoying nature in the surrounding area. The location is also convenient for exploring some of northern Italy, with Milan and Genoa approximately one hour away by car.

The area offers a nice combination of countryside, nature, wine and Italian culture, while still being relatively close to larger cities.

    Accommodation

The Workawayer will have a private bedroom and a private bathroom, providing a comfortable space to relax and have their own privacy.

I hope to create a friendly and relaxed environment where we can share meals, experiences and time together while also respecting each other’s personal space.

    What I hope to learn

I believe cultural exchange works both ways. While I can share my knowledge of dogs, Italian culture and life in this area, I would also like to learn from the people who come to stay with me.

I am interested in their culture, traditions, languages, food, experiences and different ways of looking at everyday life. Every person brings something different, and this is one of the reasons I enjoy meeting people from other countries.

    Payment

As this is a professional business activity, the Workawayer will receive free accommodation and a payment of per hour worked, in accordance with the applicable minimum wage requirements.

The working hours and tasks will be agreed clearly in advance so that both sides know what to expect.

I will also make sure that the Workawayer has the appropriate arrangements regarding visas, work permissions and insurance where required.
