There are 2 of us living on our commercial organic farm myself and son Oliver. We do different tasks on the farm and have paid workers here too. We have farmed organically for 30 years and we are passionate about organic farming, sustainable living, good food and keeping fit and healthy and welcome anyone who shares these interests and wants to learn more and we are passionate about producing sustainable healthy food to sell to local people. There is a great opportunity to learn about producing quality food and organic farming here and we are happy to help people improve their spoken English.
We farm in a lovely part of west Wales with 1 farm adjoining the Ceredigion coastal path and the other 8 miles from the sea, with views of the Cambrian and Snowdonia mountains of Wales. It is fantastic walking and cycling country and we have horses to ride if you are a competent horse rider. The beaches are numerous along this part of the coast and the Welsh culture strong in all the local villages. We sell produce on the Farmers Market in Aberystwyth, this is an interesting cultural University town of Wales. You can gain experience in organic growing and poultry, sheep, horses and cattle handling and management. Other skills include cooking with the food grown on the farm.
My son Oliver and I (Liz) require help on our 2 small commercial organic farms, certified with the Biodynamic association to Demeter standards, where we live and work along with our dogs, horses, sheep, cattle and poultry. We grow horticultural crops out in the field and in polytunnels and the work for helpers includes helping us with weeding, planting, picking and packing vegetables, fruit and eggs. We also have sheds to clean out and general tidying of the farms. You need to be physically fit to do these chores and to enjoy being outside in the sun and the rain as much as we do.
There is a comfortable 6 berth caravan on the farm with shower, hot water, kitchen, 2 bedrooms for helpers to live in so you have your own space, you may be sharing this with another helper but 2 is usually the maximum number staying and we always ensure everyone is agreeable with the situation. You can bring your own bedding or we can provide it. We all eat the food we grow on the farm together in the house at lunch and evening times and everyone helps with the cooking.
We encourage helpers to go off the farm on their days off, we can usually arrange lifts to the village 2.5 miles away and town 8 miles away but you need to be happy to catch the bus, we do live in a rural location. We have bikes you can use and numerous local cycle tracks but you need to be good to cope with the hills of Wales and happy to walk across fields to the bus. Aberystwyth is an interesting town with all facilities and tourist information, also Aberaeron, Newquay and there are the dolphins to see in Cardigan Bay.
