  • Description

We are a sled dog kennel with over 100 Alaskan huskies and puppies - located 15 minutes outside Alta city in Northern Norway.

We are looking for a couple or two volunteers for the summer (June/July/August). Due to the coronavirus there won't be much hospitality work. We still have over 100 huskies who needs food, care and training. In addition to our 100 adult dogs we are bringing up 5 litters of puppies which demands good feeding, cleaning and training rutines.

Staff and volunteers will all be working 5 out of 7 days per week and this is what a normal work day will look like:

    09:00 Water dogs
    - Clean dog yard
    - Walk/exercise dogs and puppies
    13:00 Lunch (30 minutes)
    - Maintenance work
    16:00 Feeding

We are looking for handy outdoor entusiasts. Any outdoor lover would enjoy their time in Alta with its wide range of opportunities in nature. A car is shared between the staff. We have a lot of equipment (tents, sleeping bags, hiking equipment etc.) available for all staff.

A passion for nature and dog sledding sit at the Husky Lodge’s heart. One inspiring the other. It all began with Eirik Nilsen, our founder, in Narvik, a Northern-Norwegian town surrounded by Arctic nature. He discovered the thrill of leaving life’s daily comforts behind and challenging himself against the elements of nature. Most of all, he discovered how it made him appreciate life so much more.

From 20 dogs in 1990s to the almost 100 huskies that call this place home today. Through the years we are proud to say that we have kept building on the passions that started it all. From our dog sledding trips to our accommodation, we do everything we can to let our guest have an experience of a lifetime!

Staying and working at Holmen will teach you a great deal about animals and nature. Taking care of approximately 100 Alaskan huskies is no easy task, you will learn a whole lot about body language, patience and communication. Watering, feeding and training the dogs will challenge you both physically and mentally as it takes place outside in all sorts of weather conditions. Dog sledding in the winter season can be challenging with temperatures below -25 celcius. You will learn survival techniques and first aid in arctic conditions.
From past experience we see that the biggest benefit for people working here is challenging them selves and their comfort zone in a new way.
