My name is Remon and I help run the Forest Healing Foundation, a grassroots conservation organisation near Kandy. Our mission is to conserve high biodiversity forest and regenerate degrading land in Sri Lanka and our vision is that "forests stay forest".
We have been running a forest restoration project on the edge of the Knuckles mountains for a couple of years and are really proud of how our 500+ new trees are growing. However, the recent announcement of new roads to the area has put the forest adjacent to our existing project at risk of deforestation. We are therefore urgently launching a campaign to protect the land and need your help to develop campaign and fundraising materials.
You will be based at a family run eco lodge in central Sri Lanka that focuses on reforestation and community development. It is run by a Dutch/Sri Lankan family who love nature, animals and improving the lives of the locals. You will be welcomed as one of the team by the fantastic staff and will have the opportunity to get to know our wonderful local community.

You will learn how a small, grassroots NGO operates and have a huge opportunity to make your mark on our project to save the forest. We are always open to new ideas and we love to work collaboratively and creatively.
You will experience life in the jungle and how to work in a traditional Sri Lankan village culture. You will also experience how to live a simple life and giving back to nature and the local community.
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers with ideas who are willing to dive right in and become part of the team.
We are looking for like-minded people who share our love for nature, speak English and love working in a team. We are especially looking for someone with filming/storytelling experience. Your help is needed to create a series of short videos to promote our new campaign to protect the nearby land from deforestation. This will involve filming, editing and working with the local community to capture the heart of village life and the importance of maintaining the forest. We are ideally looking for someone who can bring a GoPro/equivalent and a drone would be a major plus!
Whilst here, you can also get involved in other projects with our Forest Healing Foundation, such as planting, watering and maintaining our newly planted trees, assisting with our marketing and social media accounts, helping with the community shop, teaching the villagers/students English and interacting with visitors.
English, Dutch, Sinhalese, limited German and limited Swedish
Accommodation will be given free at Sandiya's homestay which is nearby (400m from us) with attached bathrooms. You will share a room and a bathroom with potentially 3 other volunteers. Although you will have a separate balcony, room and toilet you will live with a traditional Sri Lankan family which is a great experience. There is also a huge array of wildlife in the local area and you can expect to spot deer, monkeys and lots of birds on a daily basis.
Internet is available and all 3 meals will be given free of charge.
You will be helping 5 hours per day, 5 times a week but those hours could be spread throughout the day. For example, you could be doing 3 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon depending on the help needed. This will always be discussed beforehand.
It will be a learning experience that will contribute towards a great cause.
