    Description

Welcome to our community, culture and new ways of living

This is a growing community project in Markt Piesting, Lower Austria. We are a group of people with visions, ideas and plans for exploring new ways of living, working and connecting in the Piestingtal region.

We are interested in discovering existing ways of life and traditions in the region – including some that are quite traditional – and exploring how they can be transformed, expanded and brought into dialogue with new ideas. We believe that change can grow from places where people meet, exchange ideas, create things together and experiment with different possibilities.

At the moment, we are in the early stages of developing a place that is already available to us into a lively, open space for the local community. Our vision is to bring together different functions under one roof: a café, a cultural forum, a regional shop, a vegetable market, a space for yoga and movement, and an art workshop.

We see this place as an opportunity to connect people from different backgrounds and generations, local traditions with new perspectives, and everyday life with culture and creativity. It is not a finished concept – it is something we are currently building, shaping and discovering together.

Alongside this wider vision, this is also a small co-housing community. Our home is situated in the centre of Markt Piesting, while at the same time surrounded by nature. We are close to the Hohe Wand and the Schneeberg, and Vienna is easily accessible – about 40 minutes by car or around one hour by train. The local train station is just a five-minute walk away.

At the heart of our home is a large shared garden. We grow vegetables following permaculture principles, take care of our chickens and cats and enjoy spending time outdoors. There is also an outdoor sauna. We regularly come together for garden and work weekends, community sharings and planning sessions.

Community, for us, does not mean that everyone has to live in the same way. We value trust, openness and the freedom to bring in different personalities, talents and perspectives. We don’t follow a fixed set of values; instead, we try to find shared solutions whenever questions, challenges or conflicts arise.

Currently, seven people from Austria, Germany and the USA live here, together with two cat and several chickens. We are still at the beginning of a much bigger journey – creating a place where community, regional life, culture, nature and new ideas can meet.

If you are curious about alternative ways of living, interested in community and culture, and enjoy being part of something that is still developing, we would be happy to welcome you into this process.

  • Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange is an important part of life here. We enjoy eating together, spending time around the campfire and making music together. This happens sometimes regularly and sometimes we also enjoy our privacy. We are also in regular exchange with other communities and initiatives in the region, so there are many opportunities to meet different people and perspectives.

We also plan community gatherings around specific topics that are relevant to our region and our future. These include food sovereignty, Pecherei – a traditional craft from the region that is recognised as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage and that we would like to help revive – and the development of our café.

We hope that cultural exchange here goes both ways: you can get to know our region, its people, traditions and emerging community projects, while we are curious to learn about your culture, experiences, skills and ideas.

  • Help

    Help

We are mainly looking for someone who enjoys practical work and getting their hands dirty. There is plenty to do in our garden and around the house: helping us trim hedges, stack and chop firewood, paint our wooden doors, and join us on our communal “gardening days”.

One of our current projects is to clear and reorganise the cellar spaces and create room for three new areas: an event cellar, a workshop and a vegetable storage cellar.

At the same time, we are very open to creative and design-oriented initiatives. If you enjoy developing ideas, designing spaces or imagining how our “third place” could look and feel, we would be very happy to see your ideas and creativity become part of the project.

There is room here not only for practical hands-on tasks, but also for people who like to contribute their own ideas and help shape a place that is still evolving.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will stay in your own private guest apartment, which we have recently renovated. With around 33 m², it has a combined living and sleeping area as well as a private bathroom.

The apartment gives you plenty of privacy and your own space to retreat to whenever you like.

We share some meals together as a community. When this is not possible, you are welcome to use one of our kitchens to prepare your own meals. We provide groceries, and you can also enjoy fresh vegetables from our garden and eggs from our chickens.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

One of the great things about staying with us is that you get both: easy access to Vienna and beautiful nature right on our doorstep.

Vienna is only about one hour away by train, making it easy to spend a day in the city. At the same time, within just a few kilometres of the community, you can reach wonderful mountains and hiking areas. The nearby Föhrenwald is a particularly beautiful place to explore and spend time in nature.

For getting around locally, we have cars and a moped and can usually organise transport together when needed. So you don’t necessarily need your own vehicle to enjoy the area and get around.

Our location makes a good starting point for discovering both the cultural life of Vienna and the landscape and local character of the Piestingtal region.
