We are an Albergue (kind of a hostel) that is providing shelter and food for people with HIV. The situation in Mexico is quite hard for people who are infected by the virus because of a lack of knowledge of the locals. They think they get infected by shaking their hand, obviously a big misunderstanding.
Our goal is to spread the information about HIV and teach people how to prevent the virus. Also we try to maintain and increase the health of the people in the hostel. Medication, healthy food and loads of activities.
Especially activities are extremely important. This will give them energy and some fun during the day. This is also why we need you! If you could provide activities or classes, you would be more than welcome to come over. This could be anything. At the moment we are focusing mainly on sports. Besides that we are practicing English (native speakers come over please!) and mathematics. You are welcome to show us any talent you have so we might be able to do something with it in the future.
This will be a great way to learn about HIV and all the consequences that is brings with it. Also, will it be a great way to practice your Spanish, as most people don’t speak it. They will teach you some Maya for sure and you will taste the best food from Yucatan you can find!
What we mainly need is a positive minded person that is willing to teach people anything you know (preferably with some knowledge of Spanish). You could think about giving yoga classes, sports, craftwork...anything basically.
Besides activities, someone to talk to would be really helpful too. Some people here don’t see their children or don’t have any contact with family members at all. Someone to share their story with would be highly appreciated.
You will get your room that you might have to share with other volunteers. The area has a massive garden to spend time after work/activities. Every morning, afternoon and evening we will eat together and there will be snacks in between them.
You will work just a few hours a day so you will have plenty of time to explore the city. It is a 30/40 minute bus ride to the center and they are leaving every 10 minutes.
Every Friday at 8 PM there is a great event going on in the center. A Mayan ball game, how they played it back in the days. Definitely worth a visit. Sundays are always busy with the big food markets at the square.
Yucatan is famous for its cenotes. There are thousands of them in Yucatan State. One of the better ones you can find in Cuzuma, 40km form Merida. There are some great Mayan ruins not too far from Merida as well. Chichen Itza is 120 km away and Uxmal about 100 km.
