    Description

We are a family of 4, living on a 20 acre hobby farm in the West Tamar Valley. We are about 7 minutes' drive out of the nearest town (Exeter) and about 30 minutes' drive from Launceston. Kate is a Science teacher, Denis is a farmer/ runs a weed removal business, Lincoln is 12 and loves music and Ben is 9 and loves athletics. We have chickens, sheep, a fruit orchard and a vegetable garden. We also have two very energetic dogs! Our place is peaceful, with beautiful views in a lovely location- but is also really close to all the conveniences of Launceston. Kate, Lincoln and Ben drive into Launceston every day for work/school.

As we're in a rural area, you will certainly see native wildlife such as wallabies, birds, echidnas- we also have a platypus in our creek. Denis is an expert in native plants. We are proud of the beautiful state we live in and are happy to share it with people. We are originally from Sydney and have done quite a bit of travel in Australia. We are all friendly people and are keen to learn about other cultures while sharing ours- we have several friends who are workaway hosts and after meeting their workaways, we all think it's a great idea to welcome people into our home :). Kate and Lincoln are very interested in languages and always love learning more.

    Help

We are very busy with our jobs and our orchard, vegetable garden and property maintenance all get neglected. We'd love some help with weeding, basic animal care and general maintenance. At times, it might also be helpful for you to assist with picking up the children or dropping them off at their activities.

We live in a comfortable, modern house which has been designed to be warm in winter and cool in summer. We have a generous guest bedroom with it's own bathroom. If needed, we could add some basic kitchen facilities like a fridge and microwave, otherwise we would be happy for you to join in all our meals. Kate loves to cook, especially bread and cakes- so it's probably not the best place for someone who doesn't eat gluten! Kate, Ben and Lincoln spend one or two nights a week staying in Launceston (as Kate works in a boarding school) so there would certainly be opportunities for you to do your own cooking if you wanted to. Otherwise, Denis is pretty good at cooking eggs :).

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Mobile phone reception is pretty good if you are with Telstra; we have broadband internet which can be slow at times, but is good enough for Netflix! You will need your own transport if you stay with us- or we can take you places, but you'd need to fit in with our schedule. There is a limited bus service from Exeter to Launceston, but Exeter itself is 9 kilometers away (we do have a bike that you can borrow). There are plenty of vineyards and orchards in our area, which might provide extra employment if you're interested. We have travelled a lot within Tasmania so can help you plan any trips you'd like to make in your time off. Denis in particular loves hiking so can give lots of advice and recommendations if you'd like to get out and do some bushwalking. We also have camping equipment that we could loan you. Launceston is a lovely town with beautiful food and decent shops.
We like to live fairly sustainably (our biggest impact is through all the driving we do between our home and Launceston). We avoid single use plastic as much as is practical, we generate our own electricity through solar panels and we grow a fair bit of food. We do try to balance this with modern comforts like dishwashers though!
