Currently looking for July and August.

Hello! We are a family of 5 – myself, my partner, our son, daughter, and youngest son.

We live on beautiful Salt Spring Island, on a 5 acre homestead in the southern part of the island. We have a big garden and chickens, and we are doing house renovations. We are next to Ruckle Provincial Park and heritage farm which is a popular place for tourists and locals alike. There are stunning forested and beachside trails nearby. Biking, hiking, paddling and swimming are just some of the outdoor activities you can enjoy here.

We are looking for a couple or skilled individual who can help with renovations for our cabin and. with work around the property. Possibly some child care as well.

We look forward to hearing from you!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We have travelled extensively and lived overseas in the past and love connecting with people from other parts of the country and world. I used to teach English as an additional language and we are interested in learning languages and about other cultures. You will have a chance to be a part of a Canadian family during your stay and we are happy to share our culture, help you practice the language, play board games and more!

We love spending time outdoors, hiking, paddling, biking, camping, growing, preserving and preparing good food and would be happy to share that with you!

We aim to provide a fun, supportive environment for you during your stay. Tell us what's important to you and we'll do our best to support that.

    Help

We are looking for a couple to help with work for h cabin renos and work around the property.

Experience and skills are beneficial, but not necessary. The work would include carrying and lifting things, painting and possibly using tools. We can also use help around the property for cleaning up.

We are also keen to improve our language skills, particularly in French (our son is at French immersion school), Spanish and Japanese.

The type of work will depend on the season and our needs at the time. We will let you know more about what’s involved when you get in touch with us.

    Accommodation

We have a private converted school bus to offer. It has a double bed, small single day bed, small kitchen, dining area, wood stove, large deck, hot and cold water, electricity and an outhouse (outdoor toilet). It is separate from our living space and very private. Access to the shower would be from our home. Typically we have dinner together and we provide food for you to make breakfast and lunch. A bike is available for you to use.
We also have a small cabin with king bed (day bed), kitchen, bathroom and shower.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Salt Spring is a popular tourist destination and is known for being an artsy community with a passion for sustainability.

It is quite rural where we live. The town is about a 20 min drive away from our home, and public transit is minimal and limited to the peak season (summer). The closest shop is a 12min drive away. Hitchhiking is also an option to get to/from town. You can also join us when we go. Biking is also an option but it is quite hilly.

There are beaches, trails and lakes within biking/walking distance and there is a weekly “Dance Temple” event nearby.

The area would suit someone who loves nature, quiet rural settings and who is independent.
