    Description

Hello! About three years ago we relocated from the UK back to Sicily (Italy). After many years working in London we decided to go back and to create our own small project. Marcello worked in the City in the insurance sector for many years, and now wants to cultivate his passion for beekeeping, farming and bird-watching. Antonio worked many years as a triathlon and swimming coach and would like to cultivate his passion for sport alongside farming and hospitality. We are a young couple and we have recently completed the renovation of an old country house between Castellammare del Golfo and S. Vito lo Capo. The project consists of developing an agricultural production within the principles and ethics of Permaculture. We have 2 hectares of olive trees and we would like to experiment natural farming techniques to create a heaven for wildlife and at the same time to produce sustainable olive oil. We would like to create synergic vegetable garden and a couple of intensive vegetable gardens to provide food independence and experiment new practices of soil enrichment.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Travellers may learn to communicate in other languages interacting with other travellers and participating at the natural farming project, which involves sharing information and knowledge with other farmers of the network. They may learn natural farming techniques and share with us the pathway in permaculture and sustainable farming.
There are opportunities of exploring the surroundings of the area with many natural, historical and archaeological sites. The permaculture movement is growing in Sicily so it is possible to share and learn from other member of the network.

  • Help

    Help

The main help will be required in the olive trees` maintenance, the creation of vegetable gardens and keeping the animals ( we currently have chickens and geese and have recently introduced bees using the top-bar hive). We may need help to create shelter for animals, and in building spaces for wildlife observation or gardens for biodiversity. There are also some fruit trees so producing jam and other preserves may be required. We may need also some help in running the house and doing some small maintenance.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We will provide travellers with an independent room in our apartment. They will have the kitchen and the bathroom available. We have both single and double beds. We usually provide all meals (but we don't eat meat) as we find eating together is a great time to socialise and get to know each other, however workawayers can prepare their own meals if they wish.

Travellers will be able to explore the surroundings of our area. There are many beaches reachable with bikes, cars or some public transport (mainly in summer). There are many natural parks that offer opportunities for walks and exploring. Erice, S. Vito lo Capo, Trapani and Marsala offer historical sites of importance. Segesta with the Greek temple and theatre may be reached by bike. There are also other projects in permaculture in the area that can be visited.
