    Description

We live in the cool refreshing hills of Alajuela, Costa Rica. Our home is in a safe, friendly, and family oriented neighborhood which is only 10 km from the SJO airport.

We are centrally located in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. We're only a 10 minute drive to downtown Alajuela which has all the amenities you could want or imagine ~ grocery stores, hospitals, pharmacies, vets, restaurants, ect.

In our direct neighborhood we have a convenience store, small bakery, a meat store, 5 restaurants including a pizzeria as well as a small produce store which has a large variety of fruits, vegetables, and other items.

We have our main house as well as a guest house on the property.

The guest house has 3 separate rooms with their own private bathroom, shower, toilet, ect.

There's also a shared common area kitchen which has a stove/oven, microwave, coffee maker, large fridge, sink, ect.

We operate a small B&B here. We also host 1 to 1 wellness retreats.

Jeff is a former member of the Canadian Forces (Navy) and is culinary trained.

Lisa has owned and operated her Health & Wellness business for over 25 years and is certified in many facets of the industry including ~ wellness coach, nutritionist, yoga instructor, personal trainer, Traditional Chinese Acupuncturist.

We have 5 friendly little dogs ~ 3 Tico (male) Chihuahua's and 2 female Canadian Toy Fox Terriers. They are the life of the home and love their humans.

  • Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Staying with us offers Workawayers an authentic Costa Rican cultural experience rooted in community, nature, and everyday local life. We welcome volunteers as part of our family/team from day one ~ sharing stories, experiences and daily routines, so you feel at home, not just hosted.

We enjoy getting to know each person personally, involving you in conversations, local customs, and the small traditions that make life here special.

We’re happy to teach you what we know about Costa Rican culture ~ their food, lifestyle and way of living “Pura Vida.” You’ll learn practical skills through the tasks you help with, along with insight into how we work, communicate, and support one another.

In return, we love learning about your culture, ideas, and experiences. Hosting visitors helps us grow, exchange perspectives, and build friendships that last beyond just staying here.

During your free time, there’s plenty to explore around the area. You can visit our local Farmers Market (it's huge) filled with fresh produce and handmade goods, check out museums and small cultural centers, and discover natural attractions like rivers, waterfalls, and beaches or viewpoints.

We're located in the center of the Central Valley, so we have access to many hiking trails, wildlife watching, and community events. You’ll have the chance to meet locals, practice Spanish, and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture around us.

Overall, your stay is meant to be both meaningful and memorable ~ an opportunity to learn, contribute, grow, and enjoy the beauty and warmth of Costa Rica.

We have a very active home ~ dog walking, hiking, weight training, yoga, arts & crafting.

    Accommodation

We are located in a very safe, secure, small town. We have lived here for 4 years with zero safety issues. Security cameras are installed on the exterior of the property for added security.

There is a small group of expats in the area whom we are friends with but we also have many local friends as well. It's a great little town.

We will provide you with your own private bedroom with a comfortable double sized bed with your own bathroom ~ shower (with hot water), sink, and toilet.

There's a shared common area kitchen with stove/oven, microwave, and large fridge.

Shared common sitting areas are located in the front of the property all the way through to the back terrace which has a beautiful view of Poas Volcano!

We will provide cooked beans, rice, fresh fruits & vegetables and fresh eggs. There is a kitchen for the Workawayer to use on their own and we can also arrange meals together from time to time.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We have a bus transit line which is just a short walking distance up the street as well as Ubers, taxis and we also have a very good local friend who provides driving services as well.

We're around a 1 hour and 30 minute drive to Jaco beach.

There are some good hiking trails that are around a 20 minute drive from our location.

We're close to City Mall which has a movie theatre (English subtitles are sometimes provided for selected movies).

Lots of restaurants in the area.

A very large Farmer's Market which is only opened on Fridays and Saturdays ~ it's massive and great.

    Herbie (1 year)

He's our youngest and turned 1 year old today (Dec-22nd-2025). He rounds out our Tico chihuahua's and the rest of the clan.

    Hank (2 years)

Our 2nd oldest Chihuahua. Also a Tico from Costa Rica. His bottom jaw didn't grow fully out with his upper jaw leaving his tongue hanging out of his mouth on a constant basis and we love it.

    Banjo (4 years)

Our oldest Chihuahua. He's a Christmas/Costa Rican born pooch.

    Burgee (12 years)

She's our 2nd oldest and is also a Toy Fox Terrier. She'll hijack your lap before your butt hits the seat.

    Tessie (13 years)

She's a Toy Fox Terrier. Our oldest poochie. She is diabetic but gets around pretty good for her age and health.
