  • Description

We are two educator-artists, living in a big old house on a turn of the century farm located in the heart of Cajun and Creole country of Southwest Louisiana.  Surrounded by established farm and ranch lands, and close to Lafayette, LA, we are part of a dynamic rural and urban cultural and educational community. We are active, doing interesting and fun activities on our property and in our community.

Around the property we have cleaning/housework, gardening, painting and possibly building work depending on your skills - opportunities to live in our local culture.

We are especially interested in organic gardening:  We have been exploring "air pruning" and root promotion, developing the bulk of our organic vegetable garden in grow bags, and, weed control with "weed barrier" cloth - and we are learning from the results that the thickness of the bags (and barrier cloth) is important - live and learn, better luck next season. We have been planting root plants like turmeric, ginger and horse radish. We have a mature pecan grove and a few fruit trees and blue berries and black berries.

We are interested in organic composting and mulching and keeping our organic environment natural, rich and vital. We are interested in the impact of vehicles on the land. During 2017 we put down over 900 ft of "GeoGrid" on both sides of a driveway and up and down a dirt farm road - good for parking in the grass in all kinds of weather, without making ruts, tearing up grass or getting stuck.

We are looking for independent and fun-loving adults - travelers of the world - who have the same interests to help us promote health and vitality through sustainable projects.  We are firmly resolved to promote sustainable FUN.  We speak English, but are open to smiles, grunts and hand signs.

We love meeting new people who share our vision for a literate, peaceful and fun world.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

From one of our exchangers: "There is something for everyone at their one of a kind property. Beyond any expectation, Jim and Christy shared so much of the local culture and their kind friends. I cannot get close to counting the number of folks I was introduced to. Some of which - Bill - deserve note for generosity of knowledge and enthusiasm for the local flora, introducing me to various trees, plants, and techniques for identification that I suspect I will recall many, many years from now. It was a delight to experience the nooks and crannies of Acadiana and to help in the development of their property. To sum up near three months seems whelming as each day was full of new experiences, learning, and plenty of laughs."
